Beginner Hiking Groups What are some good websites or groups to join for beginner day hikes? My friend and I want to do more hikes but we're not experienced enough to just grab a book and go ourselves. We don't mind the walk in the parks with a view but we're looking for something more challenging than just a scenic walk. We don't really want something too crowded or a hike for the sake of going up a hill (ie the Grind or the Crunch) we want to be able to get to the final destination and enjoy the hardwork with a breathtaking view. I'm personally looking into building up to an overnight hike. We've done Seymour and I've done some other hikes in Asia and this summer, definitely looking into adding more destinations to my list. We're also not looking into anything dangerous or doing any vertical rock climbs, or going off route, we're just 2 city girls who have an interest in going out of the city and taking in the mountains and really have no other friends who are brave enough to leave the city jungle. When I was in Asia I checked out some of the hike meet ups and a lot of them were avid hikers/backpackers, calling really difficult hikes "easy" and I've been on beginner hikes where it was seriously walking up a hill in the city -.- so needless to say I'm not too gung ho about signing up to just anything now. |

Vancouver Hiking and Trail information in south western British Columbia | Vancouver Trails for all over vancouver |
^ that one is great because it lists trails by level of difficulty, so it's easy to pick out the beginner hikes. As for groups, there's a huge list here: Outdoor Clubs in Vancouver - Hiking, Cycling, Running & More If you can't find a group, a lot of the beginner/intermediate hikes on http://www.vancouvertrails.com/ are well-travelled and if you're friendly enough you can sometimes find a group of other friendly people who are already there, or at least feel safe knowing you're surrounded by people of varying levels. In Whistler, Garibaldi is a good one. It's nicknamed "the cattle trail" because it gets pretty busy. The views are stunning, though, so it's well worth it. It's also pretty beginner friendly, even though it's listed as intermediate. |
