M3 returning to inline six.

As long as it still sounds amazing I'm down to get the new m3.

Next BMW M3 returning to inline six-cylinder engine
Official: BMW F80 M3 / F82 M4 Brings Back the Inline 6 Engine - BMW 3-Series Forum (F30 / F32) | F30POST

BMW M3 purists, rejoice. According to F30Post.com, BMW's North American boss, Ludwig Willisch, has confirmed that the next-generation M3 will be powered by an inline six-cylinder engine. That's right, the V8 is dead and the rumors of a possible V6 have officially been squashed.

To wit, Willisch told F30Post.com that a V6 was under consideration for quite some time, and the original thought was to use a chopped version of the S65 4.0-litre V8 found in the current car. But plans for a V-configuration have indeed been ruled out, and all that's left to speculate on is exactly how much help the new inline-six will get from forced induction.

In order to be more powerful than the current M3, no less than two turbochargers will likely be bolted to the new six-cylinder powerplant. In fact, we've even heard rumours of a tri-turbo setup being engineered for use in the M3. In any case, expect about 450 horsepower to be on tap.

Sure, why not?

Would be amazing if a tri turbo actually happened.

westopher 05-24-2012 11:34 AM

I like the sounds of this. If they are looking to please purists though they are going to need to lop 2 more cylinders off of that.

smoothie. 05-24-2012 11:46 AM

^they already did and its in the 328 and x1's

wstce92 05-24-2012 12:44 PM

As long as they keep offering the manual; they can put whatever they want up front.

crazyazn 05-24-2012 01:55 PM

Am I the only one who thinks the 6cyl sounds better than the V8?

Harvey Specter 05-24-2012 02:06 PM

Can't wait to get my hands on the M4.

k20a 05-24-2012 02:58 PM

They should definitely try inline 6 turbo for M3's in the future. Hahah

optiblue 05-24-2012 03:00 PM

it's going to broadcast engine and exhaust sounds through the stereo! joking aside, as long as it comes in manual, it'll be awesome. Manuals are a dying breed :(

dangonay 05-24-2012 07:04 PM

I'd be very surprised if it was a triple turbo. It would sound impressive to say you have a "triple turbo" but there's no reason to go that route. It would be far more complex (for example, you'd need 3 primary oxygen sensors and would have to treat the engine as if it had 3 banks).

:werd: V8 always sounds better.

monkeywrench 05-24-2012 08:51 PM

Inline 6, the way they should have kept it in the first place.

maybe it does, maybe it doesn't.. but the I6 is BMW's bread and butter it's pretty much what they do best. glad to see them using the old formula.
let MB use the V8 with all its noise and racket, i'd rather have refined smooth power.

Death2Theft 05-24-2012 09:28 PM

E46 may sure be the best looking bmw to me, but it was far from sounding good, much less amazing.

TypeRNammer 05-24-2012 09:40 PM

I like the current m3's v8, sounds really smooth.

death_blossom 05-24-2012 11:46 PM

is anybody upset about going the turbo route? I know that they're more efficient and whatnot, but I was hoping the M3 would remain naturally aspirated. more racey and pure, even if they continued using a V8.

I wonder how the ///M division would accomplish a naturally aspirated inline6 making 450hp.

they didnt make 450 with the v8. dont think theyd risk such a setup for inline 6

Engotski 05-25-2012 02:15 AM

I6 450hp n/a is not going to happen.

335i can easily out run the e9x m3 on a straight with 2g worth of mods because...turbo

Z3guy 05-25-2012 07:14 AM

^ the only way 335i will outrun a E92 M3 with huge boost......and that will last about 6month until the motor blows

artmotion 05-25-2012 10:08 AM

After driving the e92 M3 and a 135i, you can definitely feel the difference in torque in the low end. If the next M3 is turboed, hopefully they can improve upon that. However, when the e92 M3 gets into the upper range of it's powerband, it's unstoppable. A total beast with the unmistakeable growl of a high revving V8.

Z3guy 05-25-2012 10:24 AM

^ if you think the E92 V8 has high end rush, you should try the V10......

Maybe only the E46 M3...the E36 does not sound anything like that.

Not to mention this:

Engotski 05-25-2012 10:29 AM

Dont get me wrong, m3 is still bmw's holy grail and >>> 335i but really jb4 tune + dp + i/e + meth on a 335 = really fast car. I dont own one but im always around them as im in the e9x community. Top end speed on v8s is a different story tho

if all you do is drag race from stop light to stop light then yeah sure. on track handling is king. m3 will run circles around 335i's.
