Wayne Maki was a Vancouver Canuck who played with the team from ’70 to ’72 before being diagnosed with brain cancer in 1972. He died two years later at the age of 29. From that point on, the team had unofficially retired his number 11. Nobody else wore it, it was just regarded as a number you didn’t use in Vancouver. When Messier came to Vancouver he needed his number 11, so he took his number 11. This caused quite a stir because Mark didn’t even try and reach out to the Maki family to see if he could use the number. Of course, some blame has to be given to the Vancouver franchise for allowing Messier to just have number 11, but in the end, Mark was the main man behind this.

Point noted. We can agree that Messier just doesn't care about others!

it's great to see Kassian isn't taking things for granted and I have a feeling if by chance he doesn't make the team to start the season it will make him work that much harder. In Cody's case he would just be upset about not making it and complain like he has in the past.
Not sure how legit those comments are but at least it shows what kind of work ethic he has hopefully.

What do you mean how legit? The comments came from Kassian's mouth on CKWX haha. Unless you mean how much truth is behind them - but from what I hear, he cut 20 lbs (fat most likely), so he seems to be working hard.
I too think that if he doesn't make the squad right from the get-go, he will be even more motivated. He seems like that type of kid and from the sounds of it, is starting to mature quite a bit.

By leigt yes I mean the actually truth behind it or is he just sounding that way for CKWX. I think him being with the team last year lit a fire under his ass which showed him how hard he has to work which that has prob been one of the first times he's had that happen like that before

Definitely, wherever he has played he's been a top/producing guy (Windsor, WJC sort of, even the AHL) and now he has to actually work for his spot. Should be interesting to see how it unfolds.
Further news on the proposed CBA, which would allow teams to trade up to $4M in cap space to other teams. Really strange concept. Quote: Trading for cap space: a new option to consider | Backhand Shelf | Blogs | theScore.com
Earlier today Greg Wyshynski of Puck Daddy wrote a post on an interesting part of the proposed CBA, which would allow teams to trade their unused cap space (up to four million dollars worth, anyway) to teams in need of it. (The info was first reported by Larry Brooks and John Shannon.)
As Greg noted, the concept is actually rather appealing if teams get back picks or prospects in return. A salary floor team could trade some of it’s cap space they aren’t using anyway, and improve their team in the long run. As an Isles fan, I’d say “Yes please” to that.
However, if the swap is cap space for cash, it would feel a little unseemly, a stark reminder that “Oh yeah, teams are businesses.” I don’t want to think that. I want to think my team is working towards WINNING AT ALL COSTS and nothing more. If I can pretend that’s the case while rooting for NYI, then anyone can buy into that idea.
My take on the proposal takes me back to what my mom once told me: “Money doesn’t solve problems for people with money problems.”
Which is to say, if the Calgary Flames are jammed up against the salary cap and trade for space, it’s only a matter of time before they find themselves wedged up against their new cap ceiling. I’m terrible at saving money the same way that some GMs will always spend as much as they’re given. OH LOOK VILLE LEINO’S AVAILABLE HERE’S ALL TEH MONIES.
Where I could see teams utilizing the opportunity best is at the trade deadline. Teams that look like they could make a legitimate Stanley Cup run could trade for some room, add another piece, and be better than the were the day before without touching their roster.
As they negotiate this new deal down to it’s final resting point, you have to believe this option is going to be left in – who wants to get rid of it, the small market teams who get something for nothing, or the large market teams who suddenly have a new option to improve their team?
Exactly. Neither. So “trading cap space.” Welcome to the NHL.

@provincesports:
Luongo rumour mill reboot! MT @samjam99 @MarkHasiuk: Reliable source: Luongo 2 TO for Joe Colborne/1 late pick. Teams wait 4 CBA resolution
I don't like this deal. Sure Colborne is a 6'5 winger, but I think Bjugstad is going has way more potential. Premature opinion yes, but Colborne has already been traded (Bruins to Leafs). I trust Boston's scouting and GM, they did trade Big Joe Thorton because they felt he couldn't bring them the cup.

Bettman says after analyzing PA's proposal the NHL owners understand it "but there is still a wide gap between us with not much time to go."

I wouldn't mind Colborne, but there would need to be ++ for it to happen imo.

In 2005, Bettman and the owners basically broke the players union and caused a divide and they eventually caved in to the owners' demands. Now it seems like the PA is trying to create the same divide amongst the owners by playing the nice guy and wanting what's best for everybody.
From what I understand of the current PA proposal, by having the players take a hit on their salary in exchange for broader profit sharing, it will reveal whether Bettman really has the interest of all owners or just the big market ones with lots of $$ to blow. If I was the owner of a small market team, the PA proposal doesn't look so bad at all. If I owned a big market team, I'd tell the players to GTFO

Since bur is 32 id sign him 4-6 year deal, for 4mil a season. Realistically he could
Probably get more on the open market, but hes a smart guy. Theres no way hes hiting those goal totals without the sedins.
As for that Shit luongo trade. That trade is shit. Fuck trading Luongo for a guy that will maybe help
Us down the road in 3-5 years isnt the way to go. Thats wat our own scouts are supposed do when we draft. Luongo for a proven player or nothing at all.

Bettman's leverage is going to come when September 15 comes and the players stop getting paid.
It was a good move by the NHLPA, but the owners' proposal probably benefits small-market owners more, because it gives teams as many as three extra years to find success with a player who might otherwise bolt for greener pastures at the first opportunity.

Wayne Simmonds for PHI just got a 6-year extension averaging $4M a year. I think this sets a good precedent for Burrows since they're similar in points

Simmonds has one 20+ goal year and has never scored more than 50 points. Burrows has averaged nearly 30 goals in the last 4 years and consistently scored above 50 points. With the current contracts being handed out, Burr would get big money on the open market.
