Bjugstad, Gardiner, etc may be decent players..but not good enough for one of the best goalies in the league and the world.

I think Gillis stills has an advantage. He knows all the top goalies are all tied up for a least 3 years with their own respective teams.
From the top of my head, I can only think Kipper is the next goalie to be a UFA. ( I believe Quick is RFA).
In order to settle for a #1 goalie, you would have to pay up. If not, go trade 2nd, 3rd, 4th rounders for a Borbovsky.

Neither Toronto or Chicago achieve those ends. If Luongo is traded, it will be to Florida.
My ideal scenario would be to keep Loungo, but given the AV spilled that he requested a trade I don't know if that will be possible. If the public was tough on Loungo before, it's going to a living nightmare now. If Luongo stays with the team, every time he hits a lull people will not only blame exclusively for losses, but start screaming that the organization should have just settled with XXX trade deal to drop him because he isn't committed to the team... and so on...
Am I the only one who has Bure come to mind when reading about Luongo, right now?

The media have nothing to write about.
First it was the teams on Luongo's list being reported..."Leafs are on the list of teams Luongo submitted to Gillis."
Then with the draft nearing, "Gillis wants immediate returns and not prospects or draft picks."
Now, it's "Luongo forcing Gillis' hand by only wanting to be traded to Florida."
If the media can somehow spin this into a Luongo is forcing Gillis into a bad trade scenario, and the Vancouver faithful eat it up, I've lost all faith in fans.
Either Gillis was dumb to hand out no movement clauses like candy to every core player or Luongo earned that perk in his contract so when he was put in a position like he is now, he could have say on where he goes.
It's all BS.

this was on the top of /r/hockey on reddit and was so ridiculous i had to post it. hopefully not a repost.
How highly did the Blue Jackets value defenseman Ryan Murray before taking him with the No. 2 overall pick in Friday's first round of the NHL Draft? Enough to turn down an eye-opening offer from the New York Islanders, who, according to numerous NHL sources, offered all of their picks -- one in each round -- for the right to move up from No. 4 to No. 2 for Murray.
That's right, for the Jackets' No. 2 pick, the Islanders offered pick Nos. 4, 34, 65, 103, 125, 155 and 185. The bounty would have given the Jackets the following picks: 4, 31, 34, 62, 65, 95, 103, 125, 152, 155, 182 and 185. And if that weren't enough, the Jackets could have had the Kings' No. 30 if they wanted it.
Next week's development camp would have required two sheets of ice.
Blue Jackets GM Scott Howson offered a "no comment" when reached by The Dispatch late Sunday. After Friday's first round, he did mention a "very attractive" trade offer the Blue Jackets declined before selection Murray, a precocious prospect whom many think could play in the NHL this season.
The Islanders, unable to move up for Murray, drafted highly-touted defenseman Griffin Reinhart with the No. 4 pick. But they didn't stop there. The Islanders spent all seven of their picks on defensemen. |

anyways..........
The reality of suitors for Luongo was slim to begin with, and will be slim going forward. Gillis is asking for too much, and he admits that he, himself is the problem.
I can't see Toronto as a suitor with or without Schenn simply because Toronto is in very rough shape for depth in the future. Burke isn't going to part with any "promising" prospect as he shot himself in the foot after the Kessel trade. It knocked off two years off their development as a team and Burke isn't stupid to make the trade.
What can Luongo bring in return that the Canucks need? A forward for Kesler and Booth? ANOTHER 3rd line center plug?
What about defensive depth, with Rome gone, the responsibility now lies on Tanev. Bring in another guy to fill the hole left by Salo? not many of those guys out there that doesn't come with a big price tag.
This is why I can't see Luongo being moved ANYTIME SOON, theres too many "holes" and it seems like Gillis is trying to fill them all with one big trade.
Prospects are tough to part with in any given situation, and if Gillis is focused on winning it all, Prospects arn't going to cut it in the short term.
