From Elliot Friedman's 30 Thoughts: Quote:
There is a lot of debate as to why Vancouver forced veteran forward Manny Malhotra to sit. But a couple of sources, including one player (not Bieksa) who told me to look through Malhotra's second-last game, a 4-1 victory over Minnesota. It's been reported that there was one play where Dany Heatley, a former teammate, could have clobbered him but let up. I couldn't find that one, although I did find two other situations where Malhotra carried into dangerous spots: one comes about 30 seconds in (Clayton Stoner could have gone for the hit); the other is at approximately 13:10 of the third period (Matt Cullen). Players said Malhotra seemed unsure of himself with the puck, so he looked down at it a lot more than normal.

Mike Gillis openly said that putting Malhotra on the IR was the most difficult decision he has ever made. If you trust him as a human being, then you have to trust that this move was done with Malhotra's safety in mind. At the same time, you can't deny the benefits to the team from a business/operations point of view (cap space, injured players coming back).
I'd be interested in seeing clips of Malhotra's shifts where the other team let up and didn't clobber him.

I'd be interested in seeing clips of Malhotra's shifts where the other team let up and didn't clobber him. | I think it was likely a tough move for Gillis to shut Manny down for the season and he did have his safety in mind, but also find the timing interesting, putting him on IR as Kesler returned.

Honestly, with Shroeder and Ebbett FO% below 50%, shutting Manny down isn't really a operations decision. If you can have an enforcer on the bench just to play 5 mins. I don't see why Manny can't be there purely for faceoffs when he's winning over 60% of it.
I do believe Gillis shut him down was for his safety.

It was probably on MG's mind for awhile now, but he was just waiting it out until Kesler was able to return, otherwise he would have to use a plugger to fill in the open spot.
The timing a coincidence? Probably not. But nothing malicious.
