Hansen's incident is similar to a errant high stick, resulting in a 2 minute minor. Unfortunately it involved contact with someone's head, which the NHL is "trying" to crack down on. It doesn't help that it was a star player with a concussion history that got injured, but fortunately Hansen doesn't have a bad reputation. Thus, Hansen will have a hearing with Shanahan.

As a side note, it is extremely difficult to prove intent.

I can't believe Hansen is even having a hearing, the hit doesn't even look intentional
Hossa was skating backwards when Hansen has his arm in the air. Hansen realized he can no longer get the puck so he quickly lowered his arm to grab is stick and he smacked the back of Hossa's head

if that looked like intent to injure then Cooke and Keith last year should be suspended for life

Replace that canuck jersey with something else and what would your opinion be?

It "looked" harmless, and only Hansen himself knows if there is intent or not.
Whatever it is, it was a hit to the back of the head, whether he knows of Hossa's history or not, it was a hit to the head and will be reviewed by the league. Do I think he deserves a suspension? no, but will be be fined? yes

I didn't arrive at my perspective because Hansen is in a Canucks jersey. If the puck was on the ice at the time his arm connected to his head, then I would be suspicious as to why his arm would be near his head, but the puck was in the air and it was obvious Hansen was reaching for the puck.

It was unfortunate that Hossa got injured on the play, but I still do not think it was intentional by any means whether he is in a Canucks jersey or not.

kristianhay 02-20-2013 10:31 AM

Doubt Hansen gets suspended. It looked like a hockey play to me, clearly Hansen was reaching for the puck. Hossa and him were battling and it happened, didn't look malicious at all. Hansen also doesn't have a prior history of being a dirty player, so I see it being a fine at most.

#canucks new D-pairs: hamhuis-Bieksa / Edler-Tanev, Garrison-Ballard.
Makes sense that they're shaking up the d-pairings. We're supposed to have one of the best defences in the league, depth wise anyways, and it hasn't shown much this season. Hopefully this gets the guys going.

Kassian down to line 4 eh, can't see that being great for his confidence after the great start. Bad past couple of games, but still.

AzNightmare 02-20-2013 11:03 AM

Kassian had a great start, but while everyone was "Cody Who"-ing
It didn't slip my mind he was playing with the Sedins.

He hasn't done too much ever since the line change.
Sounds about right...

(btw, the other guy has 15 pts in 17 games. -3 though.)

Lindy Ruff relieved of head coaching duties in Buffalo. 16 Years.

spoon.ek9 02-20-2013 11:37 AM

don't overlook the fact that putting burrows back with the twins is what got him going too. he wasn't doing much on the second line. i think it would be beneficial to keep kassian with the twins considering his size and toughness but that lies entirely in AV's hands.

highfive 02-20-2013 11:54 AM

Give Kassian some time. But wasn't there a stat that most of Kassian's goals were not assisted by the sedins?

Sucks for Ruff. Coached for so long. I'm waiting for someone to tweet, in further news, Alain Vineault has be relieved of his duties and has been hired by the Buffalo Sabres. AV goes...hello Cody... lol

jeedee 02-20-2013 11:56 AM

Ruff to Vancouver

AV to Buffalo

Yeah, most of Kassian's goals weren't assisted by the Sedins.

Sure, you can argue Kassian was getting more chances playing with the Sedins, but the same can be said about CoHo. He's playing with Vanek and Pominville, two very good players. Could also get into CoHo's 18.5 minutes per game vs Kassian's 15, but I hate the CoHo vs Kassian debate. Two very different players.

Kassian's just got to find that consistency, which is always tough for young players to do. I only wish he didn't get demoted so quickly, even though he is a versatile player. For a young guy, going from the first line to the fourth line just like that can really hurt your confidence. Mental toughness is a huge part of the game.

AzNightmare 02-20-2013 01:19 PM

I don't have a problem with Kassian, and he showns signs of potential every now and then. I'm not calling him a bust cause I already knew he would be one of those players that would take at least a season or two to develop.

But it peeved me everytime I saw the "Cody Who".
As if Hodgson was terrible, or if Kassian was that much more "elite".
On top of the fact that we're comparing oranges vs apples.

punkwax 02-20-2013 02:35 PM

Kassian needs to be punishing people on the boards if he's not putting pucks in the net. Needs to pick up his game one way or the other.

RevYouUp 02-20-2013 03:03 PM

We got him for the grit, lol, I've always hated the kassian trade and will always do.

If it weren't Hossa there would be no suspension. Fine, maybe..

highfive 02-20-2013 03:38 PM

If Hossa was in a Canucks jersey and Hansen was in the Hawks jersey. Would it be different?

jeedee 02-20-2013 03:40 PM

@NHLPlayerSafety Jannik Hansen suspension video. Jannik Hansen suspended 1 game Video - NHL VideoCenter

Makes sense I guess

DanHibiki 02-20-2013 03:41 PM
