i like AV as a coach and generally enjoy how he deals with the media but i can't see this year ending well for him if we don't have a deep playoff run.

murd0c 03-08-2013 08:50 AM

I think the biggest issue with AV he can't adapt quick enough, I have never talked smack about him but honestly I think it's time for a change.

Ehrhoff put up 32 points in 66 games with a terrible Buffalo Sabres team last year. That's almost 0.5 PPG. He was 0.55 and 0.61 PPG in the 2 seasons he was here. So what if he isn't putting up the same numbers elsewhere? The point is he was good here. Obviously when you take the Sedins away and put in Vanek as your top offensive weapon, you're going to lose a few points.

So far this year, he's got 0.75 PPG (18P in 24 games).

Ehrhoff has put up consistant offensive defenseman numbers his entire career. Putting him with Edler gave us a crazy 1-2 offensive punch and freed up Bieksa and Hamhuis to focus only on a shutdown role, where they excel.

Even with 32 points in 66 games, he's STILL worth the $4m.

Or would do you think Garrison's SINGLE successful season of 33 points in 77 games is better at $27.6m over 6 years?

I'm not a Garrison hater...I think we need to give the guy a little more time before we judge but to say that Ehrhoff's deal is bad in any way is nuts when you compare to any other defenseman in the league. The 10 year term IS NOT A 10-year term just like Luongo isn't likely to be playing til he's 43.

At a 8.25 cap hit...so much for salaries going down. Looks like the only players taking cuts will be bottom 6 players.

My biggest problem with AV is the completely arbitrary line juggling. He doesn't give lines time to develop chemistry and then breaks them up when they do. What happened to that fantastic Schroeder/Raymond/Hansen line? Sure, Hansen and MayRay are still playing well but why dump Schroeder on the 4th line? It's quite obvious that he's more of an offensive player while Lappy, used in a middle-6 center role, would be better suited as a defensive/shutdown/pest role. The only reason why they can't play together right now is because of our lack of centers and Raymond or Burr has to fill in.

If I were AV, the lines would be...

Daniel-Henrik-Burrows
Hansen-Raymond-Higgins
Booth-Schroeder-Kassian
Sestito-Lappy-Weise

Instead, we have

Daniel-Henrik-Burrows
Hansen-Raymond-Higgins
Booth-Lappy-Weise
Sestito-Schroeder-Kassian

What good are Kassian and Schroeder on the 4th line? They're not our best defensive players and they're put in a defensive checking role.

hotshot1 03-08-2013 09:04 AM

Holy that's a giant cap hit.

Does that mean Perry's available?

I think they would have to equal that to keep Perry and if they do, that's a lot of money tied to 2 guys.

actually with new CBA it is now. any years that the player doesn't play still affect your cap-hit and that includes teams that have traded the player away. they called it the "luongo" rule. i remember watching TSN where they explained if luongo went to the leafs and retired before contract is up, both toronto and vancouver are on the hook still for cap-hit. obviously it would pro-rated but it will still affect the teams involved long after he retires.

I don't disagree with your post.
But just wanted to mention your mistake.
Ehrhoff only has 10 pts. Not 18.
He has 18 PIM. So he only has 0.42 PPG...

I almost want to hope the Canucks bust out early.
AV needs to go, and he can't keep hiding behind a strong team...
which obviously isn't that strong anymore this season.

He's outcoached in the playoffs, can't adapt, one-trick-pony strategies, stupid line juggling,
extreme favourtism, mis-manages our young players, doesn't use timeouts, can't fire up the team when needed, etc.

We all wish Canucks can take it all the way again, but even on paper,
I don't see this team being better than the one from 2 seasons ago.
And it's not like our coaching has gotten any better...

Ronin 03-08-2013 09:33 AM

Ah, wrong column. Still.

That wasn't in place when Ehrhoff's contract was signed...so not really a concern at the time. And even if...it's still less than what we'll be paying for Ballard's buyout.

I think you need to reread that.

A 38 year old injury prone Salo as a stop gap for Ehrhoffs departure? :seriously:

It was a miracle he was able to 70 or so games last year, but he doesn't bring the same level of skill as Ehrhoff besides his shot.

I'd take a young, healthy and in his prime Garrison over today's Salo any day.

Lindy Ruff, who you guys are drooling over, also benched Tyler Myers who's making $12Mil this year. So just because you're a "star" player doesn't mean you can't be benched.
