hamhuis was the canucks to lose. he openly wanted to sign here as it is sort of his hometown being from BC. same as garrison.
canucks havent signed any UFA players or won any player-picks (NTC) trades other than sundin and that was because there was a retarded amount of money on the table and it still took him half the year to decide.
how many guys have been seriously narrowed down to 2 or 3 teams including the canucks who signed elsewhere.
i think a lot of it has to do with money and sundin's case was a perfect example. i think with guys like ehrhoff, doan they were offered more money elsewhere and they took it. it looks like clowe's decision was pending an extension which he appears to be getting from NYR. did schultz get more money from EDM?
with gillis, he's always going to be looking for a bargain or guys at below market cost so for guys that want financial security, its an easy choice not to pick vancouver. canadian taxes may have factored too.
If the Rangers want to re-sign Clowe, look for them to dump some salary, especially since they also have to think about re-signing McDonaugh, Stepan and Hagelin next year and all those guys need raises on their ELCs. Someone has to get moved. I would be somewhat interested in Hagelin as a replacement Raymond but I don't see how any deal happens with the Rangers since any deal for those guys would involve a goalie and NY...well, Lundqvist.
Schultz got two years for something like $8m total which is probably a bit more than what MG offered. I'm guessing the Canucks said $6m but I honestly think Schultz took one look at Hall, Eberle, Nugget-Hopkins and Yakupov and thought that might be the start of something special.

Schultz on ELC, so his salary and bonus structure is capped; I doubt money played a role in the decision. NHL Salary Cap FAQ
He probably looked at Van's defense lineup and realized he wouldn't really have a top 4 spot for a few years. He looked at Edmonton, and realized they have no d-men so he'd be guaranteed playtime one way or another.
