Ovechkin has stated in the past that he will play in Sochi regardless of what the NHL/NHLPA thinks.

His owner has even said he will allow it. Not that it means much, NHL would probably still suspend him.

It all comes down to money...but the key thing for the league is that they want media rights..meaning they want to be able to showcase their players on their website and be allowed to uses the media from the tournament itself.
