Carefully washing your cars in the heat!

I know this may be a no brainier for some but I didn't clue in yesterday and when I sprayed my hot windshield of my truck, hot glass + cold water = cracked windshield :(

So park in the shade, wipe down the windshield with warm water first, etc

smoothie. 07-09-2012 09:56 AM

sucks. does the $200 glass cover that?

GGnoRE 07-09-2012 10:00 AM

Oh shit, good tip

i-vtecyo 07-09-2012 10:51 AM

ouch, thanks for the tip. i'll keep that in mind next time i wash my car.

westopher 07-09-2012 12:20 PM

Jesus, it was like 26 degrees. I understand that stuff happens, but this is far from extreme temps. (of course I understand time in the sun, things like metal and glass and whatnot are much hotter than ambient air temp, but this is pretty crazy)

Exactly what I was thinking..
I've done this in like 30+ degrees in California and never had it happen to me.

Maybe another factor like the glass itself?

spoon.ek9 07-09-2012 12:55 PM

haha wow, can't say i've ever seen that happen. thanks for the tip.

TOPEC 07-09-2012 01:05 PM

there must be a deep rock chip or a crack in ur glass that u didnt know abt. there is no way that water alone can crack ur windshield just like that.

In extreme temperatures yes, it is very possible, but only with ice cold water and scorching hot glass.

On a smaller scale, you can do this with a drinking glass. Put it in your freezer, wait 30 minutes, pour hot water in, it will explode.... so don't try it!

bcrdukes 07-09-2012 01:09 PM

I usually wash my car at around 730pm to avoid this problem. Happened to my dad's old Legacy once in the scorching heat.

Berzerker 07-09-2012 01:30 PM

There may have been an imperfection in the glass, an unseen chip or something like that. That is what likely would cause this. It would spider out from a weak point.

Berz out.

yogenfruz 07-09-2012 01:47 PM

Started using lukewarm water to avoid anything like this. I got a rock chip in my windshield form a while ago and don't need it getting worse.

hirevtuner 07-09-2012 02:46 PM

or you can wash the car before the sun comes out

People get up at 4:00AM? :fuckthatshit:

busdriverman 07-09-2012 03:38 PM

^haha

Verdasco 07-09-2012 03:44 PM

and people still wonder why glass explodes while being in the microwave / heat

good tip for cars!

Hondaracer 07-09-2012 04:29 PM

It's a really weird crack so I'm not sure if it was from a chip or not, I think weakness may have been created by my system

But before I washed it I was detailing the interior and when I cleaned the inside of the windshield it was the hottest I've ever felt it, I could barely wash it through the paper towel so I should have been more carefull

This reminds me of a guy that I went to high school with - he was microwaving a cup of hot water and when he grabbed it, it was too hot so he ran to the sink and turned the cold water on... 3 broken fingers

Euro7r 07-09-2012 07:42 PM

Thanks for the heads up. I have a mini ninja start on my windshield for like 2-3 years now and nothing has happened. Don't want it to become worse when I wash my car in the summer.

As simple as this may sound, I'm very cautious when holding a glass that isn't room temperature.

A few years ago I was washing dishes in a sink full of hot water; I went to rinse a glass and accidentally turned on the cold water, the glass exploded and the shards severed several nerves and tendons. It took multiple surgeries and a lot of therapy to regain even partial use of my hand.

firebird79_00 07-09-2012 07:55 PM

Jesus christ thats insane

see.lai 07-10-2012 09:06 AM

crazy -- never really handled class differently than any other household object!

imp>dom 07-10-2012 06:23 PM

that's crazy. a friend used to put boiling hot water on his frozen windshield and it was fine!

Yodamaster 07-10-2012 06:50 PM

This simply does not happen in this climate unless there is an imperfection already in the glass.

Putting cold water on something that's hot will make it rapidly contract, this means death for cracked or chipped glass. Extremely cold glass will do this is if you pour hot water on it too, except it expands instead.

It can happen to perfect windshields if it's extremely hot outside or cold, just make sure that you only put water on it that's as hot or as cold as the surface.
