My parents purchased from Richmond Subaru and I can't say they'll ever go back to them - just a bit too shady even for a car dealer for them to want to do business with them.

As for family friendly cars under 30k - are there really any BAD cars in the 20-30k range for families anymore?

I had a rental Kia Optima recently and other than shitty tires the thing was a damn nice car for the money. Lots of room, good ride quality, good NVH, big trunk, good interior blah blah blah. Wasn't sporty enough for me but something I would recommend to anyone looking for a solid sedan. Same for the Ford Fusion I rented last year, that grille is not for everyone and it's a bit hard to see out of but otherwise it's a solid car that no one should be embarrassed to be driving.

I wasn't clear about your "family" needs - do you just need something to cart around grown ups or guests or are you carting around kids? Having kids would seem to suggest something like a CRV or CX-5 etc - the cargo space in a CRV is pretty massive.

the new mazda cx-5 is both roomy and comfy but fails in the power department. it does look awesome though.

i have a friend who works as a salesman at kia. all around good guy. if you would like his contact, he can get you a good deal.

pm me if you are interested

Am I the only one who thinks the Honda Fit (Sport) to be the optimal choice? Though it may seem small from the outside, its actually respectably big on the inside. Also, the "magic seats" are awesome, allowing the car to fit more stuff than most mid-sized cars (can fit more Ikea stuff than my Accord). You also get Honda's great build quality and reliability, all for a great price. It lags a bit on the power department but I think it more than makes up for it in others.

i think if your focus is reliability and a cheap commute, i'd go for the fit. I know i wanted one cause i used to LOVE hatchbacks, but then i sat on one and hated the ergonomics...

The Sienna is a great choice. My dad totalled his one. He used the ICBC money to buy another sienna, same year, same colour, same options, it's a great van.

Thanks everyone for the input, just test drove the '12 legacy, the base model was quoted for around 28K with freight and taxes. Somewhat weary of it still with it's interior design; going to checkout the Camry and Sienna tomorrow, and as of now; I totally have a much better peace of mind with a new car lol. Had a used car, never going back there again, not unless its a "toy".

My suggestions : Kia Optima / Hyundai Sonata, VW Jetta / Golf TDI . If you go subaru, go for the turbo models ( the na engines don't have the passing power, unless it's the 3 litre engines)

Yeah, the 3.6R compared to the 2.5i base has no comparison they're like two totally different cars in terms of handling. May compare the Kia/Hyundai to the Toyota tomorrow.

Got two more suggestions:

1) The new Nissan Altima seems like a real winner. Might be worth waiting for it to show up in showrooms (couple more weeks?)

2) Burrard and Richmond Acura both have a number of 'new' 2011 TSXs and some 2012 TSXs which they are likely willing to let go of for less than $30k. There's a $2k cash incentive right now on 2012 TSXs too.

Example of a 2011 TSX that's under $30k:

http://vancouver.en.craigslist.ca/va...104924037.html - Base model, manual for $27k with 28km on it. I'm sure they have others that they are just dying to move.

Perhaps a bit of a nutty option but Springman Saab in Langley is still clearing out their Saab 9-3s and several are under $30k. No less reliable than other Euro cars at 2/3rds the price of a non-bankrupt brand.

Should update this; Looked over a few cars today and finally settled for a 2012 Sienna, it's surprising how spacious it is inside lol, the sales rep gave me a few discounts as well (well not really) it was basically the MSRP + Tax, no freight. Waiting for it now

If you don't care about resale value, I really love my Suzuki SX4 with 6-speed manual and AWD.

I paid roughly $24,000 after taxes with 0% financing.

mom is in the same boat, i'm voting for altima accord of legacy.

wouldn't mind the ILX either, but it seems overpriced compared to what you get with the other cars i mentioned.

the Altima and Legacy both come with CVTs which is something i'm very interested in.

Yeah, you should test drive the Legacy; its not a bad car if you get some options... the base model is just too "meh" for me. Was interested in the ILX then saw that it was just based off of the civic

Try the new impreza hatchbacks, the interiors are

I'm a fanboy, so my expectations are pretty garbage, the best interior before the STI for me was my parent's jetta
