land rover LR2 or LR3.
my friend gave me a ride in a LR2, i was amazed by how roomy and comfy the car is.
EDIT:
oh dam, just saw you wanted good gas mileage too. whats a good gas mileage by your book?
my friend is able to control his foot and baby it around town. hes been getting roughly 7~8 km/l
considering how much that thing weighs and has a big ass v8, i'd say thats some pretty good numbers.

Scion xB is a bit on the anemic side for power, but it can haul a ton of shit. Other than that, Volvo/VW/Audi/BMW wagons are always a welcome option. I'd also say Mazdaspeed3, but then again, the regular 3 is way better on gas. However, the Ford Focus ST is on it's way if you want a hot hatch.
From my experience of taking care of my niece, I'd suggest to buy the car seat you'd be using and bring it to the dealership to try the cars out.
Make sure that when putting the car seat in, you don't need to bend your body (the car is being too high/low). When you have to do that same action for hundreds of times in the coming years, (with every passing day becoming heavier) you'd appreciate a car being the ideal height.
Some interesting responses here. I own an STI and have had a GTI, neither are suitable for baby duty IMO. The trunk space is marginal when a stroller is factored in.
Slightly above your price point but everything is negotiable or you can pursue the used market. Fantastic mileage, nice interior with decent feature content while still having a lot of space in the cargo area. Can be chipped if more power is what you want although the car has a ton of torque which makes it a more fun to drive than the numbers suggest.
Fantastic on gas, especially being a CUV. Down on power slightly, however it is said to handle very nicely. Lots of space and resale should be good as it's a brand new model in high demand. Mazda also offers attractive financing rates.
Fantastic driving characteristics. Very direct communicative steering and that smooth 3.0L inline 6 while still having some cargo room. Some nice features including navi and panoramic roof. Keep an eye on the used market for these as occasionally a sport package/manual transmission car will pop up if that's your thing.
There are a lot of options out there. Maybe prioritize what you want out of the vehicle so people can give you better choices.
I bought my ls400 because of this. Its really roomy in the back and I can fit a rear facing baby seat in the middle and still be able to have my drivers seat how I like it. If your budget is that, maybe look into the newer ls460`s, those things are pimp.
Like a previous poster mentioned, all baby seats and their bases fit differently. Some fit better in a certain car than others. I tried out 3 different seats in my car, then decided afterwards.
A word of advise, get a travel system with the baby seat, base and stroller. As the baby seat clicks right into the base that you leave in the car, and the baby seat clips into the stroller. It makes it so much easier moving the baby, instead of having to take the baby in and out each time. Makes a world of difference when they can stay sleeping.
had the same concern with OP last year when i had my son.
with a sedan that rides low, you'll be bending your back bringing an infant seat in/out if it's off of a base. compact SUV you won't have that problem but i never liked riding high.
we got an 07 accord sedan v6. acceptable leg room in the back but i'm 5'7"
trunk space is acceptable IF you buy collapsible baby gear (strollers etc.) if you're getting the bulky stuff (which i personally don't like) sedan is gonna be rough for you...it's always a game of tetris
i say go for a wagon like others say. some guy has an A4 wagon down the street from me and it looks like it has good space for storage. not having a trunk is super convenient for chucking stuff in the back which would be super awesome when you have to deal with a baby and all the luggage you'll be carrying around.
like jin said, +1 on a seat with a base. when the baby is sleeping you don't wanna wake him & rustle his jimmies. just unclicking it out of the base and carrying him around is SUPER convenient.
You can find one used for just under 30k, plenty of power has SHAWD, decent in gas. Lots of luxury toys and gizmos, very good back seat room and more then enough storage in the trunk. It even has a 3rd row for 7 passenger seating!
Fits all of your criteria although it might not be the most fun to drive.
Mazda5, not as big as a full size minivan, bigger then a sedan.
trust me, getting in/out of the car is tough with the car seat. Mazda5 is a little higher up then sedans so its easier on the back because in the sedans, you needs to put the car seat in the middle seat... as time goes on and baby gets heavier.. lol you know how it goes.. and if you plan on having more down the road... good luck with the sedan...
Then you have the stollers and other baby stuff.. the extra cargo room in the Mazda5 would fit nicely...
THE 2012
MAZDA5
0% APR for up to 84 MONTHS
$21,950 for the GS
$24,545 for the GT
I would say Camry. Good mileage and easy to get a child seat in and out of the back. Good size trunk. I easily get four sets of golf clubs in that thing. Boring to drive. But, considering you have a family, the priority is safety and comfort.

I know this is atypical of Revscene, but go look at a Ford Fusion
These are an awesome deal on the lightly used market, great cars too.

I test drove a 2008 XB with the 2.4 motor and found it pretty decent, first gen is slow though. The current gen one's feel cheap and hollow on the highway, hard to explain but its not a substantial car especially if you're used to german feel
How about a Ford Edge? I test drove a 2011 Ford Edge and it was smooth to drive... Not too boring... I don't like the cluster for some reason. It distract me sometimes because of their random shit displaying it, like music playing, time, etc. but then they do have nice features.
