| Properly parking a standard car
So this is what I have heard and am wondering if anyone can elaborate.
Stop car, turn it off. Put it in gear (1st or reverse), and slowly let go of the brake. This will slowly apply a load onto the transmission/motor. Once the vehicle has stopped moving, apply the e-Brake
- Reasoning: If you put the car in gear (With your foot on the brake) and apply the e-brake, and let go of the brake pedal, then all of the weight is being supported by the e-brake (since no rollback has occured), if your e-brake snaps, your car will roll forward and potentially continue onwards (steep inclines, assuming you didn't turn the wheels toward the curb) since the only thing holding the car is internal friction between the motor/tranny, which can easily be overcome if there is enough momentum
True or false? I used to put it in gear, apply the e-brake and let go of the brake pedal, but the above reasoning makes much more sense. In the last little while I have slowly applied the load onto the transmission and re-inforced it with the e-brake afterwards.
This isn't really meant to be a debate about mechanics or anything, purely educational. I understand that most people's parking habits don't really matter, but I'm just curious as to how it SHOULD be done  |

the logic is sound, but then again you say "parking habits dont really matter" LOL
In the end if you think it will make the life of your car last a little longer by all means! Seems like you are being extra careful so i doubt it would hurt the car. Other than, "go right ahead" to "it doesnt fucking matter, stop being a pussy and just park the damn car" you prob wont get better answers than those, in the end if you feel more comfortable doing it your way then do it your way.
tldr: if it doesnt hurt anything why the hell not.

For your curious minds 
This is what I do for parking on normal road
Stop car > E-brake > turn off > first gear.
For uphill or downhill
Stop car > turn wheel > slowly release brake to let the car roll a bit towards the curb then brake > E-brake > First Gear.
For me fixing/changing E-brakes is cheaper than transmission should anything goes wrong

When on a level surface I always park in Neutral with E-brake on.
If parking downhill put in reverse. Parking uphill put in 1st. + E-brake obviously.
When putting it in gear for a hill I let the e-brake hold me and just slip it into gear after I'm stopped and vehicle is off.

I never leave it in neutral, even if I "think" it's flat. E-brake needs to be adjusted over time, and sometimes you don't pull it up as much as you think.
There's a gradual slope on my parent's driveway and my sister-in-law pulled the e-brake (but not enough) and left the car in neutral and it had rolled out to the sidewalk when we came back.
Always leave it in gear!

That's how I always do it by instinct of driving. Now that you mention it as a concept, I don't even know where I picked up to do it.

And to add to the subject...TURN YOUR WHEELS PROPERLY.
If you are parked facing down a hill, turn wheels TO the curb. If you are facing up the hill, then turn AWAY from the curb(your car will roll towards the curb, and your tire will grab the curb and stop)

uhhh if you park on an uphill you turn the wheels into the curb.
so please turn your wheels properly

There would be no curb to catch the tire which prevents the front of the car from rolling into the middle of the street when you park on an uphill and turn your wheels into the curb
That's dangerous imo, correct me if I'm wrong as I always turn the wheels away from the curb when parking on an uphill

okay that was kind of a trick answer.
let me finish.
Gridlock was in fact correct, IF there is a curb you turn the wheels away.
what wasn't mentioned is that if there is no curb (my street for example) you turn the wheels to the 'curb' so the car rolls into someones yard instead of traffic.

^^uphill turn your wheel to the left so if it rolls the car will swing into the curb instead of swinging out into traffic
when i park ive always put the ebrake then into gear because its not as harsh on the transmission

I do e-brake + 2nd gear...and I don't yank the e-brake all the way every time.

i always left my car in neutral + e-brake when im on a flat...but after reading some of these answers..i think 1st gear always will be my new thing
