Holeshot, real close to me so I'll service it there as well.

So I have my eye on an 08 SV650 for a very good price.
The catch. It has 125k on it. The dude rides 25k/30k a year.
His words;
Spoiler!
the bike is really well equipped: emulators and re-sprung forks (set up for about 190 lbs), Ohlins shock (the simple one: S46DR1), screen, hugger, tail-tidy, V-Strom hand guards, fender extender, sliders, swingarm spools, Scottoiler, headlight relay, aTRE, TPS reset, ECU reflashed, folding shift lever, Nissin 18mm radial master cylinder, Spiegler s/s brake lines, HH pads... I went back to the stock muffler, cuz it runs better that way (so I sold the Yosh to stonecold). the suspension is superb ( Sikorsky said it was "gorgeous"), but the brakes are still mediocre - that's the key weak point of all SVs - the bike stops, and gets to ABS activation, but it takes a good hard pull, is all...
I'm very interested in the bike but I have one lurking concern.... engine life.
I believe him when he says it's been cared for.
Realistically what can I expect from an SV650 in terms of lifespan for a very well maintained bike.
at 125k it is quite high for an 08. professional inspection highly recommended.
is the seller providing service history of what has been done ie valve clearances etc?
sv's are quite the workhorse. As long as the maintenance list is kept up to date, should be alright for that price. I'd check the compression, visible leaks, state of the hoses, then the wear and tear items such as brakes, tires, chain and sprockets etc.
I guess what i am trying to say is, at that mileage there should be quite a bit of maintenance required for trouble-free riding, if it hasn't been done so already.
at 125,000 kms, the bike has had a lot of use. it has been down several times, but there is essentially no damage to the bike, just to the sliders (minor scratches elsewhere). I had the exhaust valves on the rear cylinder redone at about 95,000 kms. the bike runs great, makes good power (just over 72 hp on the dyno), and doesn't burn oil, but it does have a lot of miles on it. the compression test is great, but the leak-down test shows the age of the bike - things get 'loose' after all those miles! still, I reckon it'll run another 10,000 or 20,000 or 30,000 kms before the engine would need more work. you could talk to the guys at Modern Motorcycling about it - they've done all the major work over the years. I've got all my receipts - it's been fed a steady diet of Motul 5100 (change and filter before it was parked). it's on Michelin PR3s at the moment with about 3000kms on them - I get 10,000 from PR3 rears and 14 from the fronts. and I'm hard on tires...
The boys over at Modern seem to know this bike well.
Straight up motorcycle school, Pacific riding school, Pro ride. Ect. It would be almost stupid not to take any achool designed to save your life on a bike. If you plan to take it early next season, my girlfriend is learn ing so we can all make friends. :3

For a new rider, where would be a good place to get some riding experience done? school 1 on 1 practice etc. ?
Like Quoc said, School, school, school. And a word of advice, don't buy a bike until after you attend said school. Pacific Riding school is at the top of most people's lists, worth every penny.
