Thujone is the active agent in grand wormwood; a prohibition of thujone does mean grand wormwood would need to be excluded from the basic traditional recipe for absinthe, making it not a true representation of the spirit, no? | The amount of thujone that actually makes it through distillation varies by drink, and even by batch. It's the herbal ingredients that makes absinthe what it is - yes, including wormwood - not the chemical components of those herbs. So an absinthe could have wormwood and very little thujone, or could have a lot. It depends on how they make it (tests done on vintage absinthes show very little thujone content most of the time btw, although it is possible that it breaks down over time). And if they purposefully make it with high thujone content, you can be 99% sure that it is absolute garbage and not worth drinking.

Peyote shouldn't be that difficult to obtain, it's legal in Canada and legal if you're Native in America.
LSD is legitimately very difficult to find, and has been for the last ten years. William Pickard, who was almost indisputably the largest supplier of LSD in history, was arrested in 2000 and that cut the world supply by a claimed 90%. Interesting story actually, Melgren holds two PhDs, maintains a vegetarian diet, used his experience as a marathon runner to outrun DEA agents despite being in his fifties, and of course, was busted with 42 kilos of crystal LSD (1kg of LSD produces 10-20 million blotters) in his lab, which happened to be located in an underground Atlas-E missile silo.
Still... LSD is available if you use common sense on who might have it. I'm given the impression that the series isn't an especially serious pursuit by the artist, because most of the portraits are done while under the influence of drugs given to him at hospitals.
