We have a spot in our driveway for a parking pad that doesn't obstruct our garage but b/c our building plans say our driveway is designated as a driveway City Hall says we can't use our driveway as parking and that it's only for driving our cars out of our garage and onto the street. Also

If you claim rental income on an illegal suite you can still write off the maintenance costs. That’s what we do.

In hindsight I would have just taken cash and not claimed it however we spent so much in the first 2 years it was nice to get a big chunk back

So when they say "makes all secondary suites legal" that means even those that don't meet building/electrical/plumbing/fire codes?

I mean it's one thing to say a suite's illegal because it doesn't have a dedicated parking space, it's a completely different thing to say a suite is illegal because it doesn't have correct fire separation or proper egress exits...

So who evaluates this? Sounds to me like the government still has some figuring out to do.

And then we have vancouver doing 4-6 units per 33-40' lot with not a single parking spot on site.

Has to meet building code but cities can add other rules (like parking minimums or arcane things like rooms have to be a certain size or it has to be below ground etc) to slow down the legalisation of suites.

The province is creating a fund to help owners renovate their suites to meet secondary suite standards - in exchange renting it at below market rates they'll forgive the loan after 5 years.

Rimpy is a realtor. From my experience, she seems to be the listing agent for all buddy-guy styled new construction duplex listings in east van.

Parking is tied to the Zoning Bylaw. You can technically apply for a DVP or BoV to try to get around the parking requirement.
