Having had a garage with a similar but less steep ramp (https://goo.gl/maps/StoC2ENUpR9hbcNx8) I'll say that it's not just the ramp that you'll scrape on but that the angle you have to take means you can't get through the garage door either or the sightline are so bad that you'll hit something.

When I tried to get my fairly narrow 1G TSX into my garage not only was I scraping the underside but I couldn't see where my hood was relative to the sides of the garage cause I was pointed up so high in the air so someone would have to guide me in (we never managed to get a car into our garage). The rear lane is only 20' wide so you can't go straight on into the garage - you'll be at some weird angle which makes your car wider at the point of entry.

Personally, I have never understood the logic behind building something like that when zero considerations were given to usability. (In a past life, I did a few courses on user interfaces and usability.) For that matter, as someone who grew up in a house that has a driveway leading (down) to a garage, I have a massive dislike on garages that are pushed all the way to the edge of the backlane. It's a usability nightmare, and you have no driveway to do stuff on.

I'd much rather have a driveway than to have that extra yard space.

Is the design (with garages pushed right up to the alley) driven by municipal bylaws? or is it just developers trying to maximize yard space for the home owner?

Pretty sure. Build and flip in 06/07 I think.
The property next to mine had the same issue with the Hydro pole, but they paid Hydro to move it to the corner of the lot.

Wife and I finally said enough of the city prices and pulled the trigger on a house sitting on quarter acre lot with a massive detached garage. It’s out in Yarrow but backroads are great and essentially trading our townhouse straight across the board for it was a no brainer. Kids and dog finally can run around as much as they want.

Do you work remote? How's that gonna work? I've been looking at lady Smith or Nanaimo and you can still get new detached for like $800k I found a few year old new build, with basement rental AND LANEWAY HOUSE for $1.2 tempted to just move out there and retire or live off rental income.

When I was doing finishing carpentry at trump tower I worked with a guy who was a labourer and would drive in to Trump tower from Yarrow every day to make like $25 an hour

He said the drive was his “relaxing” time.. was scared he was gonna shoot up the place lol.

Imo it would he preferred to work at the yarrow McDonald’s for $15 than drive 3-4 hours a day for 25 lol

I would go for Langford if you can rather than Nanaimo.

Yea maybe I'll take a look later this year, I had a friend that moved to lady Smith and I can chill there for a bit to feel the vibe. She didn't really say anything bad about it so far besides everything closing early.

When I worked at Evo, the operations manager lived in Yarrow and drove into the Canada Way office/garage everyday. He said it was fine, he left home before 6 everyday to beat the traffic and left before 3pm. I don't know how he dealt with being on the road for like 2-3 hours everyday. His car wasn't particularly fuel efficient either.

He also had an acreage and he liked playing with offroad trucks, so he needed the space, and I guess proximity to trails? I don't offroad so I have no clue.

Langford and Nanaimo are not really comparable. Langford is just a suburb of Victoria. Nanaimo stands on it's own. It's like someone saying they're considering a move to Kamloops, and telling them "I'd go for Richmond instead"

I've actually considered buying a detached house in Alberta because I guess I'm swooned to the idea of buying a freehold house with double garage, huge yards and 3 levels for $400,000 instead of a hastily built, clinically designed shoebox worth $650,000.

Waiting for AI to replace me so I'll move in there eventually

I’m outside sales/account manager in the construction/building industry with my territory being anywhere from Hope to Tsawwassen to Pitt Meadows. Most of my time is still going to be spent in the Surrey/Langley area but having no office to report to is huge.

My wife works in Aldergrove so will be a bit of an adjustment but ultimately having the extra space, yard, proximity to family (Chilliwack and cultus lake) will win every time. Kicking strata to the curb is the best feeling of all.

Wow. Congratulations @bcuzracecarz.

Wishing you all the best on this new chapter of your life. Please post back in a year with your thoughts.

This looks like the only listing that would work for our family right now in Yarrow and even at todays rates, a mortgage on $1.2M is $8k a month...

I welcome jeans shorts cowboy hat wearing white girls I'll join the red neck life with my cyber truck.

But I can't live with those slanted ceilings that cuts into the room, just makes it feel so claustrophobic

that's what my cousin and assistant do, leave their house at like 5am. cousin goes to the gym in burnaby and my assistant i think just chills in his car till 6:30

as for leaving, my assistant leaves at 4pm when i leave so he's getting screwed with traffic regardless heading home

I was thinking Red Deer as my girlfriend lives there at the moment. It's growing at a good pace and I can see it as a hotbed for future settlers. People from the likes of Vancouver and Toronto are already cashing out and relocating to cities like Red Deer.
