Did someone say what do they do with extra money not invested? Put that shit under the bed mattress, hide from wife and kids lmao lol. When u have family, that extra money if any never seems to see daylight before it gets spent. Maybe just me haha.

Sorry to say, but you're not the average Badhobz... lol

For the average person a RRSP is the only thing they'll have. And they would be lucky to have $100k in there by the time they retire. People are so ignorant to finances, it's sad.

I know people who are 75+ who are still working because they need to and they are not in good health. It's pretty sad.

This has been posted here before I think but I'm still kinda blown away at:

1. What developer thought it was a good idea to build a new apartment building right in the middle of the worst block in all of Canada?
2. Who the hell would ever choose to buy an apartment in the WORST BLOCK IN ALL OF CANADA? (even for rental income - like what kind of tenants do you think you'll get?)

Edit: Another unit in that building is for sale: https://www.zealty.ca/mls-R2812020/4...-Vancouver-BC/

"Don't miss out on this incredible opportunity for an affordable, turnkey investment that promises significant returns. This well-designed 1 bed/ 1 bath unit boasts a functional layout and features convenient built-ins in both the living room and bedroom, along with stylish laminate flooring and a Euro-style in-suite washer/dryer. Notably, it stands out among the other units in the building by offering both a secure underground parking stall and a locker. Located just steps away from Gastown and Chinatown, this property offers unparalleled convenience with its proximity to a plethora of shops, bars, and exceptional restaurants. Moreover, it warmly welcomes both pets and rentals, making it an ideal choice for a variety of lifestyles."

It's affordable bro, beggars can't be choosers. Authentic Vancouver atmosphere. You can probably make money by streaming what happens outside your window daily......? Profit apartment pays for it self.

One day that apartment will be worth $$$ when the area gets gentrified. Yaletown and Main St used to be shitholes too.

If theres profit to be made, why wouldn't you build

Not everyone is supaballin dawg.

If you can deal with walking past methlovers and constant 911 noise, its a great building/deal for the area. The south facing units are actually quite quiet. We maintain their mechanical systems, lots of regular people living there, some crazies, some weirdos....

That pretty much is a union pension bud.

DB pensions don't really exist outside union/public sector jobs any longer.

Yes I was joking. I would only recommend HELOC if he wants to move somewhere else while retaining his old place, or pass down the place to his kids, but if they're DINKs and happy with their place there is no reason to.

I'd also rather be debt free but I think the majority of people my age have accepted that we will have a mortgage until retirement.

I think DBs are pretty much dead everywhere now. Even the city jobs are switching to DC unless you have one already.

Already figured out I can retire at 56 lol

A friend of mine works for Vancouver school board basically a labourer who apperently has a DB pension as well but everyone there makes fucking peanuts yet they all hang their hat on having a DB pension lol

Good luck with your life when you’ve been making 70k a year to get that pension 35 years later

Railroad is DB. Both cn and cp. so is most of the port terminals operators and port authority.

That’s the extent of my knowledge so yeah I guess you’re right.

I hear this kind of mentality quite a bit. People working minimum wage jobs that they don’t want to upgrade because of “benefits” when in reality their dental etc is capped yearly at like $1500. So clueless. Same as the people who refuse overtime as they think they’ll make less.

You're almost in the same boat as me from this perspective... if I stay where I am I can go bye bye at 55 with full pension.

Staying where I am until then is going to be a fuckin monumental undertaking in patience and cognitive dissonance though.

Yea the longest I’ve stayed at a job was 9 years and it was daunting towards the end to imagine staying there any longer lol

The fucking Telus pension I used to have was garbage though, I worked with a guy who’d been there for 17 years and after that length of service, at 65 he was going to get $1700 a month.. he also said he had very little in terms of investments or savings because he saw the pension as his retirement

I was like bro, you can’t even afford a basement suite on that

My mom's old workplace got rid of the DB they had, to change to DC. They had a vote on it and people were like "yeah I want control of my money" and then freaked out because they couldn't spend it on vacations and boats and cars. One was so upset he had to put the funds into RSPs rather then buy the boat he wanted that he saw a lawyer about it.
It was an industrial linens place, and folks working there were definitely not financially literate. Pretty sure some weren't even literate in English.

I'm in a DB, and can take an unreduced pension at 55. Company will probably throw packages at us to get us out earlier though.

Not counting the jobs I had in high school and college I've only worked two jobs over the last 25 years, this is my 12th year at my current workplace. I'm in construction (non-union) no pension at all.

I've actually really been struggling the last little while on what to do. I feel I'm capped as far as salary goes at this Company, I've had both recruiters and our competition reaching out to me to try and poach me but I've always declined even entertaining it (had the largest company in our industry reach out to me 4 weeks ago and their office is 7 mins from my house), part of that is loyalty but the biggest part of that is the ability to WFH as much as I want.

Right before Christmas my boss is dropping off my small bonus, I'm talking like 4:30 on the Friday before Xmas (Normally we get bonused out weeks in advance so I didn't think anything was coming), I was expecting Jelly of the month club but they did a little better than that. Anyway, he mentions that he wants to shake some things up in the new year, he'd like me to start coming in more to work in the office which honestly I'm not totally against but I guarantee my production goes down proportionally to how much I'm in the office, there are just way too many distractions.

More than ever I'm thinking of at least following up with some of those other companies, see what their offering because I'm fucking miserable at the moment and last year was the best year I've ever had as far as metrics go by 3x so I should be happy but I'm not.

Not that I'm an expert by any means, I like to ask people for advice all the time on my own situation... but what I'm reading in your post made me think to myself "They're asking for more, and you're getting less... satisfaction especially... time to move on"

If your boss is taking away WFH and that's your main reason not to go to the place that's 7 minutes away and has a higher ceiling if they're a big player? That's a done deal right there in my mind.

Yeah, more opportunities just based on the volume of work they do and bigger teams. Money wise I don't know, this would have to be a discussion.

If I was 10 years younger I'd just start my oqn company, I know this business inside out and have so many contacts. Another option is go work for a GC, I've also been asked by a few of those if I'd be interested in making the switch. There would be more money there for sure but definitely kiss WFH goodbye and the hours would be a lot worse but the ceiling would be raised significantly.

Maybe I'm going through a mid life crisis but I know today and for a while I really have not been that happy. Don't get it totally wrong, some of the things I get working where I'm at I'd probably never get anywhere else, like the abilty to pick what I'm working on and for the most part choose the direction of what projects we're going to go after and which ones we're going to pass on.

I turned down a job with a $20k/year pay increase because it required every day in the office and commuting to a different city.

The 1.5 hours I'd spend every day driving + insurance increase + gas + missing time with my 17.5 year old dog and GF... that $20k is nothing just like that lol...

You should start your own business quasi. Makes sense to me. You’re not that old yet and you shouldn’t let that hold you back.
