Fuck all of that, visiting there has been a bucket list item that I doubt we'll ever do
I was actually on Kilimanjaro but yeah same same.

You know I've been thinking it might be a combination of Traveller's Diarrhea and the medications I took for Altitude sickness (Diamox) or Anti-Malarials (Malarone)

Both times I took Malarone I had the shits, but combining it with DIamox might have given me the ultra-shits for a few nights. Plus I had a cold too so that didn't help.

For Antibiotics I was prescribed Cipro for a while by doctors, and now I'm getting alot of azithromycin instead these days.

richmond ppl are the worst when it comes to the bubble. i used to know a lot of richmond ppl who literally never left richmond because they felt they had everything there.

i had to turn back on my trek to EBC at around 5000m not because of diarrhea but because my anxiety was through the roof. i was having mini panic attacks and laying awake all night gasping for air and wondering if i was going to have a heart attack. no more of that shit for me.

I dunno, I grew up in Richmond and as soon as I got a car I spent most of my time outside of Richmond haha.
Most of my buddies were in the Tri-cities, so I spent most of my time out there.
Surrey is one area I rarely ever ventured into, beyond one of my uncle's place who lives on 56th...

Richmond has great for food. thats about it.

its also pretty safe as the average income is moderately high and people keep to themselves. I dont know if its a great place to raise a family as it seems to be very "asian heavy" and thus not exposed to enough multiculturalism.

I think Richmond has great food if you're Asian and you can read Chinese.

As someone who grew up in Surrey and now lives in Vancouver I’d say Vancouver is pretty great for virtually everything. Dining, accessibility, etc.

I can see why people never leave because A) everything is here, and B) going anywhere South or East is a total shit show after 2pm

I just don't go to.. or shop in Delta lol. 72 doesn't move either. It's better with the new lane restructuring but still. Fuck going to Krispy Kreme lol. For me, if I need Walmart, I'd rather go to Queensborough. If I need Superstore, I go to Richmond because the selection in the Richmond location is more akin to my taste. The Save-On-Foods on 120 x Nordel isn't that bad to get to or navigate around for me. Same with the Canadian Tire, but I'd rather go to Richmond.

Like actual West Van, there seems to be actually some deals there. Like you're paying $3m for some new builds in van and have to live with your laneway neighbor, fight for parking in your Vancouver special lot. Vs there's bigger houses in West Van + View + lot for $3-$4m ish range depending on how hard you want to ball. Same with Buckingham heights. You can get some close to 10000sq lots. For not much more than new Van prices but much bigger house. That actually feels and looks the price you're paying.

thats exactly it! and thats why we ended up back in richmond.

We could have bought in....

High point Langley
- 8000-10,000sqft home on a 1/4 acre lot. GREAT! looks like you made it!! but youre also stuck there and never be able to leave. Driving to anywhere takes an hour+

Vancouver East
- a lousy 4000sqft lot, with a ugly ass lane way house which ill never use, no parking, no presence, and only benefit of being close to my parents

Vancouver west
- a tear down shack was 3mil so i guess that would have been EXCELLENT IDEA!? fuck you van west

Burnaby
- Older stuff, do able but from the 1990's for around 3-3.5 mil on a larger lot. If you wanted a newer home then its not much better than Vancouver

Anmore
- i like the area, i like the houses, i dislike bears and raccoons. Commute is also gonna be shit

Ladner/Twassassen
- great, but tunnel is a real killer. In hindsight if you buy in this area, it has the highest chance of going up once the new tunnel/bridge/whatever is done.

LIVING IN THE NORTH SHORE MAKES YOU A HERMIT

west van utility bills and Northshore price factor will make you regret moving there

Quote:
North Shore residents are paying more for healthy groceries than people in almost every other region of the province, according to a new report by the BC Centre for Disease Control.

The report, released on July 10, tracks the cost of 61 minimally processed but commonly eaten food items, including vegetables and fruits, proteins, grains, and oils and fats, from 245 stores around the province.

To feed a family of four in the North Shore/Coast Garibaldi region, which includes the Sea to Sky corridor, Sunshine Coast and some North Coast communities, the CDC estimates a monthly average cost of $1,379 – more than $100 higher than the B.C. average of $1,263.

The study found purchasing roughly the same products in Richmond would be $200 cheaper per month.

I don't like going to Surrey because first of all there's nothing there for me except for maybe a few sandwich shops and krispy kreme, and second of all the routes in and out all kind of suck from where I am.

Pros:

- some of the houses have nice views. In our budget there was some decent newer homes that had nice views but they were closer to horseshoe bay area.

Cons:
- She has to drive her ass up those hills and likely die along the way
- We have nothing to eat there, i can only go to aburi market so many times. Asian food options are garbage there
- it'll always be raining. even when richmond is overcast, it'll be raining up there
- lions gate / 2nd narrows both suck so bad i dont even want to deal with that. Compared to the Oak, Arthur Lang, and Knight (+ Queensborough if you wanna go that far to bypass traffic) you are basically stuck most of the time
We looked into North Van because we liked the vibe and neighbourhoods, but I had the same concerns of being stuck there when the 2nd Narrows is backed up the hill from 2pm, and forgot Taylor Way and trying to get through DT.

I told my wife that the baked porkchop on rice factor mattered. I need to be within 20mins of a place that sells baked porkchop on rice. That made Coquitlam Center and up the hill more viable than North Van. We can't afford West Van anyways.

Vancouver is only good for going to DT and Richmond, and maybe Burnaby. I much prefer living in Burnaby for accessibility, but yeah the food scene in Burnaby is a little sparse.

When we were living in South Burnaby, I would get excited about restaurants opening and then to get disappointed because they suck, and then they go out of business.

There's so much in burnaby on Hastings or Kingsway like 10 restaurants a block, lots of mom and Pop small restaurants too.

I mean I live DT, which is notorious for people who never leave "the bubble"

But, I like to explore things even in a city I've lived in for 30+ years. We went to Lynn Valley in the North Shore for some quick hiking last weekend. The weekend before that went to Delta just to gawk at some eagles in a field. Out and back within 4 hours. Suck it Trudeau Carbon Tax!!!

Visiting in-laws in Burnaby, my parents on the Westside. We like to dine out in Gastown, Bumtown, Main St and Commercial Dr as the restaurants are higher quality than DT because of lower rents. Richmond a lot in the past but not so much anymore as many of my Asian friends stopped going out. The only place I really don't know my way around within a 30 min drive is probably Surrey but it's mostly due to lack of trying than lack of curiosity. I'd love to have a friend there show me around for instance.

A whole mess of downtowners don't leave because they don't have a car or dont' think they need to. But hell like with everything in life if you're curious about something why not? Life is short, there's always another perspective to experience.

I've had bald eagles in the big Douglas Fir tree that's in my back yard haha.
And had an Owl decide to hang in my Japanese Plum front yard just last week.

Is there anything in Surrey that's worth the trip though? I know they have that Indian Buffet place, Tandoori Flame, but I don't think that's worth the trip.

Yeah there's been a couple of juvie eagles chilling on my friend's balcony in Yaletown. I wanted to see a whole mess of them down by Boundary Bay Airport. Only managed to see maybe 4 or 5 of them together. Also discovered an Owl rehab centre down there but it was appointment only so we couldn't get in. There's supposedly a bunch of Owls in Stanley Park but I've never been lucky enough to spot one through my many walks thru there.

Crescent Beach? South Surrey, err I mean White Rock, heh.

Was going to say Tasty Indian, but that's technically in Delta and there's now a location in Yaletown. Not sure if it's actually good or just bougied up for White folk.

I dunno, which is why I need a Brown friend to take me around and show me the in-the-know places sorta like in Richmond with Chinese places. *shrugs*

Don’t really get the obsession with a McMansion VS everything else you list

What’s your backyard? 1000 sq ft? And the neighbour is 20 feet away instead of 10?

The benefits aren’t exactly groundbreaking. Personally I don’t see much of a difference living in Vancouver proper or Richmond when it comes to what you’re getting. Until you’re living on acerage, the difference between a 10,000 and 20,000 lot is moot imo.

And the trade off is living in Richmond? Lol yuck
