that's a shitty incentive anyways, we have an issue with supply not incentives boosting demand

I was at Church today and was talking to an old church member. She's around 85 years old and i've known her since I was a child.
Anyway, she was saying how it's so hard for young people these days and we got to talking about real estate. She told me she bought her house in the 80's for $70,000, a Vancouver Special that she still lives in today. She very quietly asked me, "Do you know how much it is worth today?".. Then she said, "It's at least $300,000".
I looked at her and just started giggling. I quietly told her that the house is probably worth at least $2M and she looked flabbergasted. Then we joked about her being a millionaire.
It was such a funny interaction. I don't know if she was being serious, but she is also a little senile these days, so who knows. It was a fun interaction.

What would you do with $2m at 85 though, your body is probably done, everything hurts no energy

Would ya rather have $1M at 85 or $35K at 30?

At 85, I don't think money is anywhere close to a priority. It's health. I'm sure anyone would gladly trade the $2M for their health back at that age.
I asked her what her biggest expense is these days and it's her medication. She said it was $300 a week. She said it was mostly a diabetic medication and her mental illness medication.

I think the right answer is always younger. So $15k at 30 years old! Money doesn't do much for someone who's 85.

I got to know him a bit because part of the terms of the sale were that he leased back the basement suite while he waited for a place in a retirement home. His granddaughter who was helping with his move said he initially balked at retirement homes because he didn't think he had a way to afford $30-45K/year. He thought his house was worth maybe $120-150K... not 10x that. It was actually a little sad - although he was obviously happy with the $$$ - he regretted that he didn't know earlier and didn't take the opportunity to travel a bit more before he got more frail.

I wonder if it will happen to us, one day when our homes are worth $20M per and we balk at taking a $200,000 vacation.
Perhaps it's all a perspective of scales.

I think with the advent of the internet, information is so much more available for our generation, so I think we will be way more informed in the future.
The lady at my church doesn't even use a cell phone. She only uses a landline.

The lady at my church doesn't even use a cell phone. She only uses a landline. | I would have thought most people would read their annual letter from BC Assessment but I suppose someone of that age might have that taken care of by their kids (along with all the other forms you have to fill out deferring property taxes and empty homes etc).

Interestingly her youngest daughter who lives on the island and doesn't help out at all is the favourite out of the three children and i've heard rumors that this youngest daughter is getting the lions share of the estate. Which is wild if it is true, since the two other children are doing everything for you, I would think the estate to be at least split evenly.

People could not fathom spending 150k for a house in 1980, 1.5 mil in 2020, 15mil in 2060
