I gotta admit though, seeing our two year old run around the back yard during the showings is what convinced me to do this.
^^ This was pretty much exactly how I felt too when my 2 years old started giggling and running around in circles in the living room on the first day we moved in. It was a moment I'll always remember, and it was also the perfect answer to the same "WTF have I done now?" question that I had when we took that leap of faith.
I’ve said it a million times. I always thought building a successful career, maturing and then building a family was the right course of action. Then I look at all my HS friend who knocked up their highschool gf’s and more or less were forced to purchased a house 15-20 years ago…
Then I look at myself, with a wife both with good salaries…. A kid… despite “getting in the market” 15 years ago, career movement really stopped any high risk real estate investments….. and now I live with my in-laws. lol! RIP future generations.
Getting pregnant in highschool doesn’t seem so bad after alll.

I dunno, I'm like you, needed everything in order before having the kid.
Sure I have a few friends who spit the kids out early and got in real estate 5 years for I did, but even back then they were highly leveraged. Now the big difference between them and me is that I don't really look at my bank account when I want to buy or do anything, whereas they're they're still up to their eyeballs in debt.
Seriously none of us here would be in a house if it weren't for kids.
I'm in a house coz of two dogs (no kids) does that count lol

But if you think of it from their point of view, five years later, I doubt any of those friends would even be able to buy a place now. So the idea of getting knocked up early may still be the better long term play.

?
I dont have kids. Live in a house. If anything doesnt having expensive ass kids make it harder to get a house?
My priority was having my own garage where I can work on my shit and not have some strata telling me I cant change my oil.
In general actually it was about getting out of strata, as they were always bitching about something or spending our maintenance fees on something stupid. Also the Strata Management Corporations are all stupid and do nothing to help dumb strata's navigate maintenance and contractors taking advantage of them. If anything I felt like the Strata corp was colluding with the contractors. And the problem with the strata councillors was the president was some idiot who had no knowledge of construction or anything, he was just some science teacher or whatever, and all of a sudden he's thrust into this position where he needs to be reading construction estimates for re-plumbing the building, or washing and painting the building, and the contractors can totally take advantage of the strata because none of them know anything about construction. It was fucking hopeless. I tried to help them out, as construction is my line of work, but it became painful to even do that, I just gave up and moved out.
Other benefits, my storage is right there, I dont have to go down to P1 if I need something from my storage locker. Forget something in the car? boom it is right there in the garage 3 steps from me. Backyard where the dog can run. Etc.
House is a dream for anyone i'd say. Yeah you gotta take care of it and do landscaping, maybe some dont want to do that. I find some enjoyment in it.
i'm with meme, i think if most have the finances to, they'd go for a house and be master of their domain.
having to obey strata rules can be restrictive, especially if strata is being run by a bunch of derps or by corrupt/incompetent "building management" companies

tbh I was perfectly content in my condo. When we sold I had progressed significantly in my career and was living very comfortably (was even looking at a P-car on the horizon).
It was my wife's idea to get into a house as she wanted to get into the market sooner rather than later. Also it was COVID and we gained a greater appreciation for outdoor living space.
It was also her idea to get the condo in the first place which was a great decision, and have zero regrets going into the house (even tho no more p-car in sight for awhile.)
But then again I am typically one who seeks the best out of any situation, so I think I would have also been just as happy if we were also back in the condo.
