Tesla solar roof? Do those still exist?

My neighbours Tesla roof was completed this month. Flat roof so I can't see anything. The initial quote was $30K, I didn't ask him if it went over/under. In the beginning he mentioned he did the math and the system would pay for itself in something like 25 years. I wasn't paying too close attention, I was just wondering if we'd still be living in this area or even alive then.

I watched this one awhile back and it was interesting. He's in the USA so it's not going to be representative of what we'll see here, but you can at least see the comparisons.

SSM_DC5 05-31-2024 08:33 AM

Bchydro needs to bring back the option for customers to feed the system with solar panels.

unit 05-31-2024 09:26 AM

electricity is pretty cheap here, im not sure if you'll ever make your money back with solar unless electricity gets more expensive. makes sense in california where it can cost $0.30/kwh, but less so in BC where it costs $0.10 or $0.14/kwh.

GLOW 05-31-2024 09:26 AM

some engineers i worked with stationed out of the island and sunshine coast have threw some on their roof and had success.

perhaps they're getting more sun in those areas than we do?

Traum 05-31-2024 09:44 AM

I thought BCH still has that program. It's just that it has been watered down so much that nobody can really recoup enough money for anything worthwhile.

According to an uncle that has solar panels installed on his roof, the solar panels would really still require maintenance in the form of regular cleaning. Otherwise, dirt accumulation would drastically reduce their efficiency and power output. But unless ease of access has been planned prior to installation, that may not be as easy as it should.

Yea I work with a guy who claims he pays like nothing for his hydro as well as his EV charging in a townhouse due to his solar panels in Victoria..

Kinda doubt it though when you watch videos etc. that show your consumption VS Intake

My parents did the roof on their 3500sq ft home for like 8k 4-5 years ago. It was a buddy guy company but their roof has many peaks and valleys and is fairly complicated.

Roofs are the type of thing though, you go with one company and it could be 40, another company could be 15. There is almost no value in these “warantiees” the larger well known companies provide and say that’s why it costs so much because a properly installed roof should never fail. And what’s the worse case scenario if it did? A few shingles?

The home we just bought is a Vancouver Special, known for their very simple roofs when it comes to repairs.

The owner had the roof done in 2017 for $6k. Asphalt shingles. Kept the same plywood.

The company provided 10 year warranty on labour and then whatever the manufactuere warranty is on materials.

The owner of the house is an experienced tradesman who is very handy, so I feel ok that he picked a good company and as far as the price goes, it seemed a bit TOO cheap to me, but I guess maybe not.

JDMDreams 05-31-2024 03:04 PM

I'm not into construction but a roof doesn't sound like rocket science, I think the most of the cost would be the materials, I mean besides being laborious and falling off a roof or falling through a roof or doesn't sound too complicated. How much does it cost to hire some Mexicans or buddy guys with no sin? Some hammers and just nail everything in?

donk. 05-31-2024 03:26 PM

Here in canada if buddyguy falls off the roof and breaks a leg, the homeowner is responsible for his medical bills. (Uninsured contractor) Handout capital of the planet.

Labour aint cheap, 8 man crew can get a small house done in a day, 8x8x100$=6400$ labour only

If your a baller and live in a mansion with a complex roof up to 5 days. 32k labour only.

Roofing is shit work, well worth the payment

^Not sure what lies beneath the surface, but that’s a pretty cool home imo.I love that breakfast nook area.

The nice part of grand Boulevard but seeing these listing are also kinda sad. Usually the kids are selling after their parents has passed away.

ditto, some solar panel vendor with a house either on sunshine coast or squamish i can't recall presented to us and said he never pays for gas b/c he has an EV, and never pays to charge his EV due to solar panels and was super proud of it.

even if i believed him i didn't see it unscalable in vancouver or in condos

Manic! 06-01-2024 02:41 PM

My buddy owns a company that installs solar on houses. So if you got any questions i can ask him. It does take a long time to pay off but that's at current rates. I believe just like everything else hydro rates will go up. He just did an install with solar and batteries. The batteries can be set to charge themselves at night when the hydo rates are lower.

If I ever build a house I will be installing as many panels as I can.

hud 91gt 06-01-2024 03:44 PM

I worked with a couple people who have installed systems and they have definitely broke even/better then expected with current electricity prices (meaning they are saving more then their loan amounts for the install). One of them is in rainy Chilliwack, the other on the island.

ROI in BC ain't good.
BC Hydro costs $0.1097 CAD/kWh for electricity.

PG&E costs $60c USD / kWh in Cali and they get hella sun down there.
That's like 7x the cost for electricity and they have higher demand for HVAC.

Looks like Richmond blowjob realtor has some competition.
