I guess that's fair.

Though, there's a reason I'm typing this on RS and not reddit.

Bank of Canada drops rates by 0.25%. I wonder if it will heat up the local real estate market again

Nope, -0.25% is like $80 a month on a $500k mtg. You can't even get a tank of gas or have a dinner with that.

But on a $2m mortgage that's $320 and that's a tomahawk steak dinner right there!

If you're eating $25 pho in the Lower Mainland, you're eating at the wrong places.

And because I'm genuinely curious about things, I feel like I create a pretty natural social environment for people. This might be the reason why people feel comfortable around me. I'm also a pretty nice guy =D

With interns it's even easier because I'm in the position they want to be in, so when i go out of my way to talk to them they get real buddy buddy quickly because the other people in the office just give them that surface level, "Hey, how's it going, are you enjoying yourself, where you from, that's cool, yeah, etc." That conversation lasts about one minute and it's just a formality and everyone knows it. It's very rare I'll ever ask someone how's it going, I think that's the most useless question to ask anyone. The answer is always going to be some variation of, "I'm good" and people know it's just a formality and you don't really care how they're doing.

Depends on what you think rich is, but he said his mom put a down payment on a brand new pre-sale condo (one bedroom) in Metrotown for him. He's also a mainlander, so without knowing anything else about him, I stereotype him as pretty rich. I've never met a "poor" mainlander in Vancouver.
You sound like an interesting coworker, you seem to avoid the boring small talk and get right to the gritty stuff.

One of the things I hated before being fully remote was having to fluff around the mindless small talk in the office with colleagues.

"Oh the weather is nice today"
"Oh it's raining again"
"How was the vacation?"
"Oh the kids are how old now?"
"What did you get to on the weekend?"

Fucking kill me.

Viet Noodle Guy has raised their prices faster than a hooker's dress.

Their lemongrass on rice is now $20, most Viet places are now charging around that for some damn chicken on rice.

$20x2 for a noodle soup or rice, + $10 for spring rolls, you can't even get chicken wings for under $10 anymore. That's already $50. x 5% tax that's $52.50 before tip no drinks

I don't think the rate cut itself will heat the market, but this statement by BoC will resonate with some buyers who are still sitting on the sidelines.

Quote:
"If inflation continues to ease broadly in line with our forecast, it is reasonable to expect further cuts in our policy interest rate," Macklem told reporters.
If we see a third cut in September, then I do think the fall season will bring more buyers into the mix, but that's just a guess of course.

Other ppl rate cost of living in a basic big mac index. I've used the pho index for Vancouver.

When I first started university, it was $7 for a big bowl of pho, and $8 for it to be paired with spring rolls.

When we first moved out, it was $11.50 for a combo at Pho Hong

As we got older we learned about the "premium" pho places like Hoang Yen where they would charge $13-14 for a Bun Cha Ca.

Right now Hoang Yen is $18. Thai Son for the "economy" option is $15.25 for a large.

It's gotten pricy for sure, but it has tracked minimum wage actually, since it still sits below minimum wage for a large bowl of pho. Back when I started university, min wage was $8, right now it's $17.40 which actually is right inline.

So I booked those Tokyo Ninja Movers for our move in September. If anyone is wondering the rate is $170 per hour for 3 guys. They charge in 15 min increments and also charge for the travel time to/from their yard in Coquitlam.

Yeah man, I feel you. I'm the same way.

If I see you at work, all you're going to get from me is, "Hey Mike, Good morning". I'm not going to waste your time with small talk unless it's productive or interesting.

That's 6 years ago, and the inflation in the last 3 years have been really hard. Breakfast at Angel cafe in 2018 was $7 for omelette, toast, and a noodle. It is something like $12 or $13 now. Covid was really hard on the small stores that provided basic cheap foods.

I'm not a huge fan of the BC govt jacking up the minimum wage in the last decade. It just fuels inflation as min wage isn't meant to be a living wage. I've never made min wage other than working at Superstore as my first job. I don't know how BC can justify a min wage that's almost $1 more than Ontario.

Minimum wage is literally meant to be a living wage. That's why it was created.
The people with hundreds of millions, or billions are the ones making the economy falter. Not the poors. It's a tale as old as time.

My buddy was working on a property in West Van the other day he sent us some pics, dude bought 2 lots around him just to not have neighbours and his garage delivers cars to the front door of a 20,000sq ft house that's brand new.

These people are the ones stashing their literal mountains of cash off-shore or funelling it out of the country.

Look at the Disney CEO?? He makes $37M just his salary last year and they're fighting over minimum wage for park workers? He could cover the entire park's salaries by just turning down 1 paycheque. The gap from bottom to top is way too wide and the ones at the top are the ones that are saying oh we need to make cuts blah blah blah profitability blah blah blah economy blah blah blah meanwhile they're contributing nothing and just take take take.

Funny enough in this same vein, of all the people I know in various circles of my life, the 2 richest people that I know personally enough that they would talk about things in more than a "Hey how was your day" type of way... but the 2 biggest complainers about the economy and using terms like communist or socialist are both those 2 richest people that I know. I listen to them complain non-stop about how much taxes they pay and fuck this country etc and both of them are taking delivery of brand new Porsche's next month... one a GT3 RS and the other one whatever the electric wagon is called (I don't care because it doesn't interest me). Like, they literally are so high up they can't even see how life really is, just that they can't figure out how to keep ALL of it. Ridiculous. I told the 1 of them the other day when they said fuck this country like... bro... you JUST posted to your IG feed that you're taking delivery of a GT3 RS next month... that car costs as much as a house in most provinces in this country... you are making more money this year than you ever have in any other year... what exactly is going wrong for you that the country is fucked? No surprise he's a PP supporter too lol

Is he actually making money though? Let's say he makes $500k, he's like paying 50% of that to the gov, plus they have to deal with that new capital gain rule. He's also paying all the bs luxury tax for the gt3.

So how's that fair, you make it, great success but you get taxed to death. How would the min wage cactus waitress feel if the gov took 50% of her $17.4 and her tips from having her tits out.

Then you have all the buddy guy no engrish, Uber driver, with unemployed wife and 5 kids, that's milks Max child tax benefits and low income credits that gets them like $3-4000 a month for breathing?

It's the same thing with doctors, you can see their salary $350k but do they actually make that much after taking off employees and rent for a family practice.
