Hopefully they get rid of their useless mechanical permits for HVAC equipment next

My place only has 100A. I already had to change my dryer to gas to save space on the panel. I'll need an upgrade for sure, I need heat pumps and car charger sometime in the future.

I saw a hilarious video about how Ken Sim turned some meeting room into a workout area and people were getting pissed. I guess you can never win as politician.

not a fan of him trying to get rid of the "viewing cone" that's been long protected so we still have the vancouver postcard skyline.

hopefully he walks back looking at allowing that encroachment.
other than that he's been doing aight as far as i can see.

68style 08-02-2024 11:06 AM

Yah he's great if you're a developer

JDMDreams 08-02-2024 11:36 AM

Might as well add this in.

No shit the bikers and hobos have no money to spend.

I guess we might as well close off Hastings and main to have no traffic and see what happens to the hobos.

Harvey Specter 08-02-2024 12:16 PM

Do locals even go to Gastown? Last time I was in Gastown was back in 2011 lol.

68style 08-02-2024 01:04 PM

I probably go 2-3 times a year for one reason or another, some great restos and night spots in that area. Guilt & Co etc.

Hondaracer 08-02-2024 01:55 PM

The only times I’ve been to yaletown in the last 5-8 years or so was to play pool at SoHo

No idea how that places survives feels like such an anomaly for downtown when you’re in there lol

CivicBlues 08-02-2024 02:06 PM

Nah the reason why its "failing" is because like most things tried in Vancouver it was half-assed, no...quarter-assed.

Put up a bunch of concrete dividers and shitty aluminum chairs does not make for a good "pedestrian" experience. Oh and let's allow traffic to come thru anyways because we can't figure out how to redirect traffic to the outlying streets. Oh and they spent ages and $$$ "rehabilitating" the road surface and it looks just as shitty pot hole marked and warped as it did before.

Gastown has potential to be the best and most picturesque neighbourhood in Vancouver we just can't pull our collective heads out of our asses to actually make it so.

p.s. If you go to Gastown check out Skewers. If you don't mind lining up a bit go early and you'll get a huge plate of Greek Souvlaki and sides for like 30 bucks enough for 2 people. Feels like the 2010s again.

When bike lanes were first put in downtown the Downtown business associations screamed bloody murder until they found out that bikers spend more money on them than cars do cause bikers tend to actually stop in front of their stores versus cars which drive right through the area. The business association now loves bike lanes and wants more of them.

I think it's too early to draw conclusions about why the Gastown one isn't working - Gastown IS a shithole for the most part but maybe it's the setup or maybe it's b/c the Old Spaghetti Factory is really terrible and people are glad now to go by there anymore.

JDMDreams 08-02-2024 02:17 PM

I went to spaghetti factory in Richmond few months ago and it was booming, so obviously there's business, it's still the fact that the Vancouver one has paid parking and a bitch to get to. You can't beat old spaghetti factory prices and kids love that shit.

The sourdough with garlic butter was so good. I don't think I've been back since a first date I had back in grade 12 lol.

Hondaracer 08-02-2024 02:20 PM

Literally anywhere is better than old spaghetti factory lol

It’s always so weird if you’ve ecer stayed at crystal lodge in whistler and to get to the pool you walk by the old sphag dining room lol fuck. Half cut soaking wet staring at people eating their yucky pasta dinners :lol

PeanutButter 08-02-2024 03:45 PM

Old Spaghetti factory is a place you go as a family if you have kids. If you didn't, I wouldn't step foot in that place.

Pretty much it. Pre-child, we'd have family dinner at OSF due to my niece/nephew and I was always suggesting someplace else. Now with a kid, I'm like yeah! Let's go there

Crystal lounge is such a good spot to get wings and beers after a day of riding though.

Just take your kids to gothams. Have them sit there and enjoy a 100 dollar steak and then afterwards record it so when they turn 18 you can tell them to cough it back up by giving them a total tally of how much you’ve spent throughout the years.

If the little shit can’t pay then sue them

I literally stopped going to Hy's because it became a family restaurant full of t-shirt wearing punk mainlanders with their shitty kids running around. Like holy shit imagine paying $400 for dinner at a daycare.

Badhobz 08-03-2024 12:41 PM

Aren’t mainlanders the best ?!?! Booo yah ! Fuck you and your romantic evening. To them it’s the same as McDonald’s.

Hondaracer 08-03-2024 02:08 PM

Every “known” place that used to be viewed as an expensive or higher end place locally has been ruined by mainlanders with no manners who drag kids to place they shouldn’t be.

Seems like you’ve gotta go to “white” places or places that the fusion or menu is too confusing for people to understand so they don’t come there and ruin it as well.

When the menu doesn’t have specific items that are X amount more than everything else, who wants to go there and brag you got a $45 entree when every other thing is $45 lol

It’s pretty gross. I actually enjoyed Hy’s a lot before but it’s been ruined both times I went both locally and in whistler because of the aforementioned groups.

6thGear. 08-03-2024 03:04 PM

That's a shame to hear about Hy's.

Badhobz 08-03-2024 03:21 PM

What’s that Italian pasta place on commmerical and Frances. Used to be Joes spaghetti house now it’s whatever whatever Italian thing. That place is good and devoid of Chinese people (except me!)

I agree, Gastown has a ton of potential, and I didn't know until recently that Gastown was redeveloped in the '70s to give it the "heritage" look to boost tourism.

Personally, I'd rather have Gastown as the club/restaurant part of the city than Granville St.

Pepino's/Cafe La Tana. Only eaten at Pepino's once but felt it had a lot of the Goodfellas vibe inside. I prefer their sister restaurant Savio Volpe - can always count on a really good meal there but it's damn near impossible to get a table there unless you book 3 months in advance.

It's still gross though. I'd rather go to White Spot a thousand times before I do OSF with my kid.
