We are still in designing phase working with an architect and just moved onto finer details now even though we have a general sketch of it. Once that's done and getting all the permits we need plus the actual construction.

I think there's a good third to maybe even a half that are over 45 now. I just turned 49 but like most Asians I'm mistaken for much younger (typically late 30s) - I bet a lot of folks who have met in person have assumed everyone is younger than they actually are.

I’ve many times tried to understand why people need such large houses and can’t figure it out (unless it’s multi generational). Wife, 2 kids, and myself are 1450 sqft, with detached 900sqft garage and don’t think we’d ever need more. Sure I could probably use another room or two for the odd thing but seems like a waste. If guys come over we just end up crowding around car in garage anyways. I’d like to think with a lotto win I would still feel the same way but who knows.

I think you get used to the size. You start with 500 sq, then 1000sq, then 2000sq then 3500sq. 1450 isn't that big, especially if you have growing kids, let a lone dogs. TV room, car parts room, computer room, cigar room.

i dont think there's any reason to move to something bigger without kids especially.
just more crap to clean. we have plenty of areas in the house to do our own thing.
i guess having a guest room would be kind of good but not enough reason for me to want to upsize for.

You for sure get used to the size. For 2 of us and now 1 doggy, it’s a good size at 3400sqft. I can “retire” into many places of my house and play hide and seek with spy balloon. Although she wired every room with a nest cam so she can just check the Google home app and catch me jerking off in the media room with my VR headset.
