I woudln't be so critical of the strata fees though -- after all, a good hunk of them end up going back into building maintenance and regular daily usage stuff.
If you were to do the math, the equivalent example would need to look at how much maintenance costs on a detached house would cost over 25 yrs as well, and I bet that number won't be pretty either.
The thing is, you have zero obligation to do that maintenance on a detached.
Someone who does nothing to their detached will probably get 80-90% market value for their run down home
A condo building where strata has never done a depreciation report and major special assessments coming up? You’re not even going to break even

To add to the comparisons, former condo in Burnaby by Lougheed mall was 980 sq ft 2 bed 1.5 bath corner unit, great unit in a great high rise that was built in 86
We paid $235 a month strata and we had: a huge pool, great change rooms, a sauna in each change room, a gym, 2x full sized racquet ball courts, a 25x40 workshop AND a paint room! Lol not to mention 4 levels of covered parking and additional spots were only $25 a month. Strata was great and elevators were done right before we moved in, 3 elevators.
The only special assement coming up were to replace the metal frame windows with new vinyl windows and even that was only going to be like $7000 for our unit and we had a shit load of massive windows and the earliest that would come is 2022
I couldn’t even imagine paying more than $400 a month

True, I can't dispute that. The owner would be living in a shxthole if that's what he elected to do, but he would still get a good hunk of money out of his shack.
For me, skimping out on home maintenance is no different than skimping out on car maintenance -- it is just not an option for me to even consider. If the maintenance becomes too much, I'll sell and get something newer. But while I'm there / own the car, I'll keep them both in good shape.

With a detached house you can also opt to put some elbow grease in and the work yourself rather than contracting it all out. There's some significant savings there.
Seriously though, here's the list "regular maintenance" for my house:
- Mowing the lawn
- Tending the gardens
- Demossing the roof
- Cleaning the gutters
- Raking the leaves
That's like a few hours worth of time and a few bucks in beer once the job's done... big deal
Guy “clears $4000 a month” but then “couldn’t afford fuel for his heater”
Yea..ok
Clearing 4K a month as some landscaper is almost certainly bullshit since he get a ride to and from work as lives in a bus so clearly he isn’t the owner/foreman

He probably does but he's most likely a subcontractor and I'm stereotyping here but he seems like the kind of guy who would work subcontract and not pay his taxes so in his eyes he's clearing $4,000 a month because there are no deductions being taken off his cheque. Where most honest hard working people would be putting money away to pay there taxes quarterly or yearly this guy is probably spending every penny. I've worked with so many DBags like this over the years and it wouldn't surprise me in the least if that's the case. If it is they'll catch up with him eventually.

Me and my wife could scrape by on 4K a month with a mortgage, 2 shitty old bmws a dog that eats the most expensive food we can buy, and eating nothing but organic produce and meat. We wouldn’t have a penny left, but clearly this guy is either full retard with his money or a drug addict.
It’s a shame, because messages like this discount that we DO have a housing crisis by making a mockery of it.

I have a few of the temp laborers we used to use at my old company on facebook. Typical posting housing crisis articles, complaining no one can afford anything etc
The posts that follow these are him and his GF buying “extravagent” gifts for each other like bose headphones, new sunglasses, guy is financing a brand new car etc.
The housing crisis is evident, but living dat fomo life and spending every extra cent you got, you should be looking in the mirror.

That's why the USA is so great outside of the massive white collar/tech cities... you can be a totally irresponsible fuck without a dollar to your name and swimming in toys and gadgets and still have a massive house all on a, by our standards, pretty mediocre job.
Those dudes are just trying to live in the wrong city lol... maybe even country.

Basically on the outskirts of any industrial area, you'll find RV trailers parked now
I guess until something bad happens, the city won't do much
Much like the marijuana sellers at Robson Square. The CoV didn't do anything about it until one of the TV networks did a week long story highlighting the illegal selling, no permits compared to the city permitted food trucks sitting right by them, selling to underage kids, etc.
I don't see a problem with the RV's, or people living the Van Life. I'd rather them living in an RV than seeing them camping in a park. Who cares, not my style of living, but more power to them. Have some empathy, Jesus.
I think its stupid to spend half your earnings on an apartment if hes making 4k.
$1700 + bills for an place that he probably only uses to crash and sleep after work.

More power to them?
I'd love to see one of these eye sores parked out in front of your mom's house. See how quickly you'd be posting up "how do get rid of homeless in front of my family home?"
All replaced by condos now so you gotta park the RV somewhere.

yea.. in RV parks..
there are plenty of RV park around still, i occasionally work in them and almost all of them have vacancies and empty spots.
These people just want to "screw the man" and not pay a cent to live yet are costing tax payers money with their broken down "homes"
go drive on the strip by the terminal home depot where this article guy is from and let us know how many of those "homes" you think could actually move if they had to.
