I’m digging the mouldings on the stairs, so thing different

However, give it a year and it’s gonna be covered and dust and the caulking yellowed af..

I did a bunch of wainscotting up my stairs and it pretty much needs a repaint every 2 years and I keep a pretty clean house

Guess the trend will be more touchscreen fridges in new homes as the price goes down. I saw a few new home/duplex builds with the tech. I still think it's an oversized samsung tablet mounted on a fridge and kinda pointless if you have a tablet that you can put on the kitchen counter for recipes and cooking. I'm pretty sure there's still features to control the fridge/freezer climate within the touchscreen. Mind you, this was initial impressions since I don't wander best buy looking at kitchen appliances ever....until I started looking to upgrade from my old ass apartment to duplex this summer. Still cool though from tech enthusiast perspective.

I saw one new duplex build in east van with Nest controllers so heating, cooling, and AC is completely integrated with google home. Again, it's really cool smart home technology (at the expense privacy and having a massive ton of data collected on you though).

Of course you're paying a premium on the home with all the tech if you can afford it. I feel like the future of new home builds will be cheap energy efficient materials (that may degrade faster over time) but loaded with tech and shiny/modern fixtures, etc to entice us young folks to buy it. Think modern cars but applied to homes. But of course, it's all dependent from builder to builder, municipal building codes, and what people want for the future of homes (given the state of real estate in the lower mainland). I would definitely not be amused if I bought a shiny new $1.5mil home knowing that everything is breaking down by the 5th year so you have to plunge even more money to fix and replace everything but at least the utility bills are low in the first 3 years?

A lot of issue with these smart home applicanes is that they tend to break a lot faster and have more issue then just a regular one.

Personally I'd rather have the clean seamless look of integrated appliances.

Lots of other places/ways you can build tech into a smart home.

The problem with having a big custom sized screen in a fridge is what do you do in 5 years when it breaks. parts are going to be hard and very expensive to get. Look whats happening with some older Samsung smart TV's. They can no longer use the Netflix app on the TV.

Netflix to stop working on TV models produced in 2012 and older.

Netflix has announced that it will no longer be available on some devices after December 1st, 2019 due to technical limitations. The Netflix streaming service will no longer be supported on several consumer electronics devices, including some from Samsung. This change will impact select 2009 to 2012 Samsung TV models. Affected devices will receive a notification reflecting this change.

Wouldn't a chromecast or fire stick fix that?

I've had 2 separate Samsung washing machines break and 1 Samsung dryer break all 3 within 1.5 years of purchase. Oh I've also had a Samsung TV crap out within 2 years of purchase. Never again.

In a townhome development my former company built we installed Samsung dishwashers in 135 units

Before we completed the project, over 65 of the units had been replaced, under 2 years old

I have 2 year old Samsung flat-top convection range.
The LCD display segments started doing the random techno-rave flashy blinky. Everything still works, but something in the display's electronics is definately fucked.
It's too bad because it works really good for cooking, oven cooks nice and even, I like the oversized triple front element that's awesome for big pans.

im not sure about other retailers but we bought all of our appliances from Best Buy for our home as well as our suite about 3 years ago.

they FINALLY offer a warantee which seems like it adds value. I think we paid a total of just under $500 for complete bumper to bumper type warantee on our Range, Fridge, and Dishwasher for 5 years. They cover all parts, labour etc. and if they come out more than twice, you get a complete replacement appliance

I havent had to use it yet, but for the price it seemed like a no brainer. My igniter on my range has been working intermittnatly so i'm going to call and have that serviced. I will report back on that once i see who comes out to perform the service

Call me old school but fuck smart appliances. I don't need to do my dishes or laundry or see what's in the fridge, remotely.

Spoiler!

Hot water tank in the house was on the fritz. It was one of those smart ones. Computerized auto restart and fault code LED lights. It was shutting down and reporting flame out, flame weak, etc. Repair guy told me how much it would cost to replace the board and sensor. Yikes! He recommended an old school hot water tank. It's quite not your, "light with match type," lol. Piezoelectric starter, but he told me the pilot light shouldn't be going out, anyway. I've had the hot water tank for a month now and no issues whatsoever. It's not energy star, but it has no electric controller. Repair guy told me since no electricity is required, I'd be saving whatever the rebates were worth, less the headaches.

Sometimes, simple is better.

My parents went all LG in their kitchen several years ago and only the range is still functional. Seal melted on the dishwasher causing a flood, compressor failed on the fridge, rotator failed in the microwave/range hood.

Also working in retail years ago, the Korean manufacturers (LG, Samsung) always had worse than average failure rates, not to mention the half-assed features and bloat. It always amazed me how they gained such a positive reputation. The Koreans basically set up competing teams within the organization and reward those who get features into the end product, and its not always the best feature from what I’ve heard from reps and what I’ve read online (e.g. webOS).

New appliances these days are crap, it's like they purposely designed it to break after warranty lol. My old place, we only used Kenmore (Sears brand) appliance and they were built like a tank, used for 20+ years and zero issues before we moved. New place, GE freezer crapped out, stove, washer, you name it, all broke down <10 years...

Everything is shit these days, currently our dishwasher keeps fucking up glasses and the back of the fridge is rusting (both 2015 Frigidaires), at my office both microwaves broke in under 5 years and the dishwasher leaks constantly. At my parents old place that was 2 years old when we moved in everything broke in some way apart from the dryer. The washer broke the spider, fridge leaked water multiple times, dishwasher had the seal go, the stove had the "start" button fail. Then when the stove was replaced, the new one had the glass on the door explode. All different brands, all different price ranges, all garbage.

Meanwhile at their rental property the 25+ year old MayTag top load washer and dryer still worked like a charm, they only gave them away because the new tenants had their own or something.

When my wife wanted a new washer and dryer I learned nobody is willing to repair anything these days, and even if you find someone willing to do it the parts costs are so absurdly inflated there's zero point in fixing anything. I tore apart a broken washer myself (long story) and taking them apart is so simple it's laughable, especially compared to working on a car, but nobody will do it. So I just went and got the cheapest stacking pair with a decent capacity I could find (<$600 each on sale at Costco) and when they inevitably fail I'll throw them out and do the same thing again. It's not even worth the hassle of giving two shits about it because no matter what you do or what you spend the end result is the same.
