And with the soon to be Broadway subway line ... you'd think that's a great investments. Older building with spacious units too. | It's the gold standard for leaky condos. I grew up in that hood and I remember that building being brand new and then shortly after it had these weird water spots all over the outside walls (later on then learning about leaky condos). Honestly... I also accepted from my parents, but I've paid them back 3 fold. how? Paid they for food, paid them rent even when I moved out. It's a circle of love. They helped you, you help them.
The ONLYYYYY time when I'll refuse money is when they will hold it over my head.
eg// 1 million dollar house.
"hey So in Law, i know you are getting married, why i don't give you some money so we can also live in it" FFFFFFFFFF nooooo
I never want them to hold it over my head where "I HELPED PAY for this house" when they only contributed 1% of 10% etc.
Just cause we have a basement for YOU to live in as you're aging, it does not mean YOU own the house now and you can invite your friends over etc.
i never want someone to hold it over my head on how they own it and demand their own key.

You gotta think long term. It's more than just being emasculated. It's about their limitation of your power, control, and your ability to live and make decisions as an individual and how it impacts you and others around you (i.e. kids / spouse etc.) Some people just want the world to burn without even knowing the damage and destruction they are causing.

And hearing how bad it is from 6thgear, don't be surprised they talk in front of the kids. The kids are going to grow up needing professional help too. | I've seen the inside of some leaky condos before (not this E Broadway one) and the damage reached inside the unit where 1 corner was deteriorating so bad the floor was literally sloping down. It was so structurally unsafe I got the fuck out so fast.
I feel bad for these people and all the owners at the E Broadway complex. They have no way out and that structure can't be safe to occupy and they can't sell it. How that building hasn't collapsed yet is mind boggling.
My buddy won't disclose 100% but he's in a toxic relationship but he won't admit it. I've seen first hand even his wife berates him in front of me and he pretends to laugh it off. He's trying to hold onto what's left of his pride but over the years I've seen him gain weight and the stress in his eyes says it all. But I will admit he's a resilient one, shortly before meeting him, his dad went into the hospital and 3 months later his family was burying him. At 20 he had to drop out of sfu and take care of his mom who fell into remission from losing the dad. His brother left home and was heavy into drug dealing. If it's not paying bills or taking care of the household he had to bail his brother from jail or some shit. Maybe it makes sense for him to marry into a fortune to finally have a decent life regardless whether his balls are constantly in a vice grip

Hey for the guys who grew up in East Van., do any of you have a desire to move to the West Side?
The nice thing about E. Van is the proximity to the lower mainland, but some of my friends said they would move to the West Side in a heartbeat. They said the schools are better for their kids?
I feel like I wouldn't ever want to move out of E. Van, but I admit the West Side is so much nicer community-wise.

East van more resembles what fairview/oakridge was 30 years ago. And the old east van is now... I don't want to say Surrey but...

I feel like I wouldn't ever want to move out of E. Van, but I admit the West Side is so much nicer community-wise. | I really like Kerrisdale - lots of small shops, good density, walkable neighbourhood, very green, decent transit - so I'd move there if I had the money but I'd otherwise prefer my East Van hoods b/c of the diversity. There's no T&T (or similar) on the West Side other than at Marine Gateway and there's just not enough hole in the wall Asian restaurants to eat at.
I think my kid would grow up to be a snob if we lived on the West side though. Probably have to force her to get a job at McDonald's when she turns 15.

As someone who grew up in Surrey and has now lived in east van for the past 6 years (wife grew up in same neighborhood) what I’d say the biggest advantage of east van is the proximity to the highway.
I can go from my place to my parents in Surrey in under 20 minutes. If you live west of main it takes 30-40 minutes just get to the highway. If you’re going to Richmond etc. I guess it wouldn’t be as bad but going anywhere east from the heart of Vancouver takes forever

With that said, Douglas Park/Cambie Village is one of the few areas west of Ontario St. that still has a lot of upper middle class households with kids and if I really wanted a Vancouver postal code with the means to afford it, that's where I would live.
School enrolment on the West Side has been declining for years. Many of the families who can afford to live on that side of Vancouver don't send their kids to public school - they send their kids to Yorkhouse, Crofton House or St. George's.

I just like the scene of Easy van more. Better restaurants (of the style that I like to eat at) traffic isn’t AS bad, easy to get to north shore mountains etc.
Living in kits was cool as a young renter, but it’s such a clusterfuck to get out of there, and kits beach is honestly a shithole.

Between 25th and 41st near Boundary is a sweet spot for getting around - I'm equal driving time to both IKEAs, I have 5 Superstores within 20 mins drive, I can be at Coq Centre, Richmond Center and Park Royal within 30 mins. It's pretty cool to be able to do that.

I feel like I wouldn't ever want to move out of E. Van, but I admit the West Side is so much nicer community-wise. | Lived in East Van for the past ~15 years and moved to the west side ~2 years ago (Prince of Wales area) and I'm super happy with the decision. I don't have kids yet but my decision was motivated by schools and the probability that they're more likely to meet other kids who are academically motivated and/or parents who share similar values. I've met quite a few neighbors and everyone has been very friendly and not snobby. Most, if not all I've met are either professionals (doctors, lawyers, engineers, etc.), or small-business owners etc.
For Asian groceries, we frequently go to the Asian market in Kerrisdale, Sungiven at Broadway and Blenheim, or H mart at 41st and Dunbar.
There's less "hole in the wall" type restaurants, but the food scene at Kerrisdale, Broadway/Macdonald etc. is pretty good.

I don't believe that 1/3 of Canadians can't pay their bills, plus the rate hikes don't affect them RIGHT now unless the trigger is hit. Still a ways away for the trigger rate to hit.
Sales and prices down I can believe. Sure ppl are preapproved, but it's gotta affect their purchase mindset if they are stretching it to make it happen. On top of low inventory it's bound to have a downward pressure for condos and townhouses. People buying SFH may be a bit more immune to it.

Not sure about other banks, but anyone who has renewed their mortgage in one of those BMo Readiline variable things…. Your payments don’t change a bit unless you want them too. Your amortization goes through the roof, but no one’s losing their home unless interest eventually exceeds their monthly payment. The system is setup for never ending rising home prices.

I think it's the day to day bills, everyone's food costs, supplies cost, personal locs, and gas bill has gone up. Sure your mortgage hasn't but everything else has so it will still take a hit. Considering gas went up by like 30%. |

I know I'll be demanding inflation minimum this year, my wife works for the Government so unfortunately she gets fucked over.
