Not only that, but according to the likes of Powell and others, our wages are also growing too fast lol.
I keep harping on this but we are living in and watching the absolute destruction of the middle/working class.

The wealth gap divide is getting bigger and bigger.
What do you guys classify as middle class? A couple, household income $150k, own 2bed2bath apartment?

Took a walk last weekend snapped some interesting architecture, mostly around fraser and 33rd or so, let’s see what you guys like
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
6.
TBH we have some friends who kind of poo poo our hood (Hastings sunrise) because they are used to their parents hood, Fraser and 33rd here where the pics are taken. Honestly, and no offence to anyone that lives there, but this hood is a joke lol. Every fucking block no one takes care of their shit. Boulevards are over grown down every single street, no one keeps their lawn or yard etc. I was blown away how poorly the vast majority of the neighboured and homes were cared for. Walked around there for about an hour and a half.
Personally I’m all about craftsman style, I love this house
What I like a lot about this home as well is it’s one of the few that pulls off a corner lot well. I absolutely hate when a corner lot focuses the entry/home and orientation completely on one side. This house has the side entry but then the front patio that also looks like the front side of the home. If I could build my own home it would be somthing like this.
Also came across this excavation:
Given how tidy the demo and excavation was, and how clean the site is. I 100% guarantee you not an EI builder lol.. I’ll walk by in framing and report back

I'm surprised you weren't a fan of the neighbourhood. I've lived around Fraser and 33rd for 8 years now and I feel the opposite, tons of care and thought into people's homes and yards. Lots of front yard and boulevard vegetable gardens, landscaping, some neighbours take care of the traffic circles. Sure, there are some areas that are a little overgrown, but for the most part, it is an awesome community.
The baby blue house you took a picture of with the rooftop patio is the worst. New build, but I think it will age terribly. The finishing's look super cheap.

I kind of just did loops of blocks so maybe I was just stuck in a certain section but def felt comparatively to my hood where I’d say 75%+ are at least making an attempt at gardening, keeping the lawn in check etc. it had a lot of completely overgrown properties.
And yea thay blue house, for a new build it looks 15 years old already lol

That blue house looks atrocious to me. Like something they found the blueprints for after pulling it out of a dusty pile from the 1990's.

We plan on leaving next September and taking over my spouses parents house. Their mortgage is paid off and they currently live in downstairs suite and rent the top out - 4 br/3 bth, 2 above ground floors. Plan is to sell our place and "rent" from them until they're ready to one day move out and use the rent we've been giving them as a down payment.
But my original question is about strata fees and what your prices are, just so I can get a comparison and general idea of what it would be like elsewhere. | Care to post your strata financial statements? That would give us an idea of where the money is going.
Most times people on strata have no concept of fiscal responsibility so money gets wasted on silly things.
Look at the revenues and expenses, look at the contingency fund, look if there are special levies coming up or reports. Look for anything that looks off expense wise.

I'll take #1, minus the baby blue elements. Not sure what they were thinking with those.
Fraser/Knight/Kensington cedar cottage areas are a treasure trove for those types of modern houses. I wanted to use shou sugi ban siding for my reno but then I saw the price tag lol. $12/sf USD starting ...

Seems a little crazy not have eaves in our West Coast climate. I would prefer 2ft+ eaves if I were building a house.

(and I'm a millennial myself). | I don't want a 3BR, maybe if I have kids. I just like the idea of being able to pull the trigger at any point before having kids.
My dream is like a nice 1BR with a massive rooftop patio for hosting

I’d prefer a much more contemporary house, something like the “craftsman” one you posted. But modern like #5 definitely has its place. Like a super narrow lot where your trying to maximize square footage.

I like #3 and #5 though I like modern craftsman style homes the best unless I'm filthy rich in which case west coast modern all the way (waterfront of course).

Is it just me? I am finding houses 1 - 6 (ie. all of them) to be really ugly LOL~
Just gimme a damn regular looking house. The house here looks nice, even though I'd prefer something even simpler looking. I'd actually be quite happy with a full size house that has the same look as the laneway house here. |

Yeah, craftsman style for me too. The other ones are trying too hard to be modern.

that "craftsman" style looks nice, but I'm not a fan of the "shingles" look. Is that like a newer style of vinyl sidings? I see a lot of new builds with it now.

I have definitely considered Calgary heavily... my best friend lives there and I'm a bit older so I don't care about going out to party all the time or whatever... jus the brown and cold is so awful ugh..
Or even Edmonton based on westopher saying its got a burgeoning food/culture scene. I've never been there before and don't know anyone though.
