Plastidip pictures and personal experiences?
 

anyone have first hand experience using plasti dip? just wondering if someone has applied it onto their car and took it off as well. my buddy is wanting to do his so i thought i would do some research for him. he wants to do matte color but i also know they offer glossifier as well and want to know if anyone tried that too. thanks

home hardware sells plastidip in matte black. You get it from N-motion as well, they are offering new kinds of colours.

Taking it off is easy, they are peel-able. Excellent for trim.

What are you planning to plastidip?

Did all the skirts to our 94 325i, it had the fading grey so I bought a couple cans and had at it one day.. Super easy to use. Just spray it on let it dry and add a few more coats. Had a buch of overspray but was really easy to rub off(even when dry). All in all it turned out really good. I did very little to no prep work to the surface and the paint is still holding strong.. I havent peeled it off yet, but where it got scratched a little it peeled off really easily.

just rmb to do multiple coats, else when u peel it off, the thin coat u applied will break into many little pieces making it a bitch to remove

I did mine over 2 days. 1 day to wash and dry, next day about 4 hours to spray, dry and mount.

4 cans @ $6 each from Home Depot in the USA.

2 cans used for 4 wheels, each wheel getting 4 coats 2 cans left over for touch up.

It has been about 3 months, still look half decent.

Used the matte black plastidip on my faded cf hood. Was super easy, no prep, just used alcohol to clean and sprayed on. Did about 6 thin coats. Turned out great, been about 8 months and is starting to fade a little.

Next used blue plastidip on the wheels. Took 2 full cans, again just clean then spray thin coats. Was pretty durable, after a few months just have a couple rock chips. Just have to be gentle cleaning it.

Just took the plastidip off the wheels and comes off very easy on the face of the wheel it peeled like a rubber glove, but the sides of spokes where the paint was thin just had to use a soft scrubbing pad and came off easy.

go slow and make sure you do it in a garage or something where its not windy. apply in thin coats and let it try between coats, don't rush or you will have runs.

also don't hold the can too close.

where did you get the blue plastidip from?

If your friend is considering doing his whole vehicle you must by it in gallons and use the paint sprayer.

Dilute it to about 55-60% paint, 40-45% naphtha. Mix it very good otherwise the full bottle spray will be a different consistency near the end of each refill.
Wear a mask, and have extreme ventilation. The product contains MEK. Methyl Ethyl Ketone and many other ketones and solvents i cannot spell.

Even thou 3-4 coats might look good enough, always do 5-6 coats. You will thank me when it comes time to remove it. the thicker the coat, the easier it is to remove.

If you have a black car, and want to go matte black, Count your coats, because after just two coats you might think you are done. But you are far from done.

Dont skimp out on the edges or near the bottoms of your car either. Equal coats on all the panels and areas. Trust me, I have done many cars.
And if you're familiar with painting cars and using the overlap method, i would suggest about 50% overlap with your last spray. Keep your spray pattern level with the surface you are working with and dont work too fast. take your time. First car is always scary, but you and your buddy will get the hang of it.

MEK is a very strong solvent that damages paint so how does this stuff not damage the paint your applying it to?

got it off of craigslist. some guy was selling 3 cans. I havent been able to find any in Canada, but maybe in the US, or I'm sure you could order online somewhere.

I painted my Rota Grid-Vs for my Miata a few months ago and it turned out pretty decent. I bought 6 cans of white from eBay since I didn't want to go with the traditional black route. Word of advice. NEVER use White Plasti unless you LAYER clearcoat on afterwards. I'm talking like 4+ cans. Since it's so porous and sticky, dirt just sticks in there and it takes a lot to scrub it out. Not to mention certain chemicals and gasoline dissolves the paint and turns t clear/yellow. Check out some pics.

It looks nice when it's new but unless you smother it in clear, its gunna look crappy after a while.

I just finished dipping my rims. I'll post some pics once they dry. VERY easy to do and fix up. All coats blend together after it dries up.

Make sure you do thick layers if you want to do wheels and plan to take it off later, like 4-5 coats thick. People have been recommending 1 can per wheel (18" wheel in this reference).

Home depot in the States sells the stuff for about $5.00 USD

Otherwise you're spending $15-25 in Canada per bottle.

when a part scratches i just reapply it. it does not look the best during the day but from a far or at night it looks pretty good!

Still cleaning the overspray off the tires, but i think it came out ok... I'll take some better pics later. I put on about 6 coats on each rim, used up 3 cans.

Industrial Plastics, I suggest the maryhill bypass location. They have almost all the colours and even the glossifier in cans.

I am the only person who ordered the glossifier by the 5 gallon pail. Glossifier isnt amazing either, it dries with a slight tacky feel forever. not smooth glossy like you would expect. It gives you a finish between glossy and semi glossy. not high gloss which some of you are expecting.
I dont know but I have done dozens of vehicles using many colours and variations of dilution ratios and every one who has chosen to remove to change colors over time, had no problems with removal or paint/surface problems.

Richmond auto body? They did a nice job. Except it looks like a lot of heat was used when trying to fix the rear quarter panel, caused the blue plastidip to peel off that rear wheel :(

All good though, was going to remove it over the winter anyway.

and yes you must be careful with gas if you paint the body cuz any gas spilled on plasti dip will dissolve it, happened to me when I filled too much gas and spilled onto the body, I was like :ohgodwhy: :fuuuuu: but luckily I was able to blend that section back :notbad:

might have messed up your plastidip because of the paint booth baking your paint to dry.

any place/person locally that will do a whole car? seeing vinyl wrap is about $1500 for a average sized car i wonder how much parts/labour would be for this option

Home Depot sells them for about $20 a can, that's hella expensive too cause you can get them in the states for around 5-6 bucks a can. If you're doing the whole car, you're going to need gallons of the stuff and a pressure spray painter as well which is around $300-500 each IIRC. Idk any shops that do it though.
