I like this video!

-4 and wet conditions. Pretty close to what we might see a lot of Vancouver. Allthough I would argue that the average temp would be above freezing. I think I read something like 3ºC Dec avg.

On the flip side, way too many people are so overconfident because they have winter tires. YOU CAN'T DRIVE LIKE IT'S DRY AND 30c WHEN THE ROAD IS SNOW COVERED!

I forget which thread was talking about black ice (might have been the one in VOT) but here's a prime example.

I run a set of one of the best studless winter tires money can buy on a vehicle with four-wheel drive. We've had snow and ice up here in the Interior for the last month now and I hadn't experienced an issue yet. However, driving out of town yesterday, my rear wheels hit a patch of ice and slid out from under me.

It's also a prime example of over-confidence (note the speed I was going at the time). Mind you, about thirty seconds prior to this video starting, half a dozen vehicle had passed me at a far higher rate of speed.

BTW, you only need to watch the first 15 seconds or so. My editing software on my laptop is refusing to work so I couldn't shorten the video.

All ambulances and police cars in Canada run winter tires. In fact the federal government stepped in on this and forced the Manitoba government to put winter tires on their ambulances after they said they couldn't afford it last year.

Fire trucks might be a different story as I would think the tires they run are pretty specialized.

dared3vil0 12-11-2013 11:46 AM

Fire trucks run big rig tires. They don't make a dedicated snow tire, however they do make an "on/off road all terrain" tire, which is what they run.

Also, for those working at dealerships, do you guys put winters on your demo cars, shuttle, etc?

The BC ambulances run Blizzaks all year round; even when it was 40 degrees in the summer.

BoostedBB6 12-11-2013 01:53 PM

I work for Toyota.
At the dealer I am at they have the shuttle equipped with winter tires.
The demo cars all have all season tires, however they do not do any test drives in the snow/ice conditions.
The sales staff all drive vehicles with winters on them, so if there is a perspective client that wants to drive them they usually take them out in there personal cars.

I'm dropping my car off at VW this weekend for scheduled maintenance. Wonder if the courtesy car will have winter tires.

3 hours to get to work from north burnaby to surrey because some moron in a toyota yaris decided to weave back and forth splitting both lanes going up canada way doing 5km/h... IF YOU DON'T HAVE WINTER TIRES GET OFF THE ROAD :bluemad:

westopher 12-20-2013 10:31 AM

Cab couldn't make it to my house in time to take me to the airport today, so I had to say fuck it and drive at 530am. Roads were sketchy even on my nokian winters. I'm glad I'm not driving when other people are on the road today.

Just came over from Victoria for the holidays and put the winters on this morning. Just in time it seems.

Acura604 01-20-2014 12:27 PM

so here we are.. while majority of us are still in Winter mode... for the general Vancouver area, aside from that dumping we had in Dec... is this all we gonna get?

Jan is pretty much done with above-normal temps...and yah, its still somewhat chilly in mornings/nights but not even at freezing point. Are we even going to get another dumping of snow by end of Feb?

Cuz once Feb is gone (and it'll be a quick 28 days)... that's it, we be slapping the rims back on ! ! !

adambomb 01-20-2014 12:35 PM

My winter mode is the same as my summer mode.
My summer mode is the same as my winter mode.

westopher 01-20-2014 12:36 PM

Yeah I'm keeping my wheels on in preparation for trips to whistler/baker, but as long as they aren't getting snow there is no fucking point in going. This winter is the worst I've seen in 18 years of snowboarding. If there hasn't been any snow by the end of Feb I'll throw my wheels on with my summers.

dared3vil0 01-20-2014 02:37 PM

^ I'm heading to big white in mid february because there's literally zero good snow around here... Hoping for a better February.

Iceman-19 01-20-2014 08:56 PM

WOW. Sure sad I kept my mud tires on and drove all winter so far. Its been so scary driving on the dry roads.

meme405 01-21-2014 07:05 AM

Worst snow season in a long time... I am so pissed, I was supposed to hit like 30+ days at whistler this year and I have like 7... And most of those days sucked.

There isn't even enough snow for them to get a half decent park going. At this rate, I better get my mountain bike all fixed up...
