I know it's a long shot, but has anyone here had experience with both the General Altimax and the Continental WinterContacts? Wondering if the price difference is worth it for the Continentals.

TypeRNammer 10-19-2012 11:06 PM

I don't have any experience with the Continental WinterContacts but I do have experience with the General Altimax.

The Altimax does a great job cutting through snow and has excellent grip.

Plus the price I paid for a brand new set was an absolute steal. 205/55/16 , 400 bucks for the set brand new.

EDIT:

2 years ago when there was that one big snow fall, I was safely cruising on Knight Bridge while people were struggling to keep shit straight. Some of them spun out on the exit ramp :lawl:

I have the same tires, =D. They're great, probably swap them on in 2 weeks

For a studless snow tire in the 'budget' category, the Altimax takes it for me. Lots of excellent reviews, lots of people happy with it. If I had extra $$ to spend I would either go with the Michelin Xi2/Xi3 or the Bridgestone Blizzak WS-70. Or the Nokian Hakka's, but I have no experience with those.

Anyone know a place to get cheap 4x114.3 15" steelies?

Wondering about the same thing.

There aren't that many in that size, but this ad's been up for a couple of days
Steel wheels 15" 4x114.3 $40 for 4

Trying out the new performance Michelin Pilot Alpin PA4, yes, the tires are mounted already.

skylinergtr 10-22-2012 12:15 AM

driving my SL with michelin pilot sport a/s until the weather gets colder.

My explorer has brand new michelin ltx a/s which has had no problems with any winters for the past 10 years (i bought another set because of how pleased I was). Have to do some major maintenance on this car, then its ready for winter!

mac25 10-22-2012 12:38 AM

psssshhh i aint got the money to buy that shit.

optiblue 10-22-2012 01:17 AM

Blizzak WS70 for sure, the DWS aren't a dedicated winter tire.

My Blizzaks are down to a little above 6/32. should still be good?

will slap them on this upcoming weekend...although i wanted to experiment to see how the General G-MAX AS03 do in light snow.

Winter Tech - Bridgestone Blizzak FAQs

Well, just expect a drop in performance around the time you hit the indicators or approx. 5/32", which is around the time that winters are supposed to be less effective for snow anyways.

jmanhas 10-22-2012 09:07 AM

just put on winters on my m3 cabriolet, too scary to run summers now with this car!
not gonna take any chances!

my first winter with a RWD car...this should be interesting

EvoFire 10-22-2012 09:08 AM

2 degree C mornings :fuuuuu:

Only good thing was its dry this morning. If it rains AND its 2C then I'll have to swap.

Gh0stRider 10-22-2012 08:05 PM

put them on yesterday :)

adrnlnrush00 10-22-2012 08:19 PM

Just ordered a new set of Blizzaks WS-70 from Costco down in Bellingham. I tried some of the local sources and the price gap was too huge.

$777 USD for all four mounted, balanced, taxes in... out the door.

Going to put these winter tires on my OEM rims. Sad to have to pack up the summer rims.

k3mps 10-22-2012 08:24 PM

I think costco has steelies for $40.
i only went to the willingdon one but i think they had 15/16. not sure about 17

roastpuff 10-22-2012 08:32 PM

At this rate my winter tires will have to go on by the weekend. It's getting colder and colder!

Mr.C 10-22-2012 09:59 PM

Mine went on today. Bottlecaps ftw!

dared3vil0 10-22-2012 10:22 PM

Just bought a set of winters from discount tire direct... This is pissing me off, they had a Guarantee delivery date of TODAY, they don't show up and discount is basically telling me they have no clue where the tires actually are...
