Windows 8 Thread

Windows 8 is coming out on oct 26 and so are a lot of devices for it.

Devices will come in 2 flavors.

Windows RT: These will run on Arm CPU's and will only run apps made for Windows RT.

Others will run Intel and AMD CPU's and will run everything. AMD devices will also run Android apps right out of the box.

Good list of windows 8 devices:

Windows 8: The complete new PC launch list | Reviews - Laptops - CNET Reviews

Anyone thinking about buying a new device?

Why would you need a new device when most current hardware will run it just fine? Unless you're looking at the rt version.

^Mostly to take advantage of the Metro UI for tablet I guess.

I've been using a Win8 tablet a lot at work and I find it really useful. It's a good mix between tablet and PC.

I haven't really looked into any of the other devices but I would get one that has the stylus that's not capacitative (don't remember what it's called off the top of my head lol).

There are a lot of people that want a tablet with a full OS.

Price for Windows RT tablet are out. $499 for the 32 gig version. Seems a bit high to me.

AnandTech - Inside Microsoft's Surface RT Tablet

Edit: $519 pre order price in Canada with out a touch cover. $619 with comer and $719 for the 64 gig ver with cover. I wonder what the Windows Pro prices will be.

id like a tablet if its running the full Win8OS but im partial to the microsoft surface design especially with the cover/kb

supposedly Nokia will be releasing a tablet as well now (its been rumoured and denied for awhile but looks like its true) but i'd only be interested if its not RT which i doubt it will be

Globe and Mail reports that Surface 32GB will be $519 in Canada. Keyboard is $130. The 64GB Surface will be priced at $719, but it will come with the keyboard. However, the keyboard it comes will not have keys that depress. That keyboard can be bought for $140.

Source: Microsoft

Personally, I'm waiting for the x86 tablets. I've always wanted a tablet that could run a full OS. It looks like this is it.

Yea I would wait for the 2nd gen. tablets as well. At these prices, including the increased prices for Canadians (I really don't understand why they do that) and ~$100 for the case with keyboard, I can't justify purchasing the Surface at the moment. If they priced their Windows Pro Surfaces at this price, then it would sell like hotcakes. Sadly that's not the case. Hopefully my negativity is wrong about its influence on the success of Windows 8.

Edit: I take it back.

Click on Help Me Choose.

With Office Preinstalled, I can now justify the price lol. Also, it doesn't look like you'll be missing much compared to the Pro version. It is already more productive for business/school with typing. Chrome + Photoshop already have apps made. Windows RT isn't as bad as I thought it would be.

Acers tablet will be out Nov 9th in Canada. Starting at $500 for the 32 GB ver with an Intel Atam CPU. $150 for the keyboard dock. The Dock also has a battery doubleing the batter life to around 18 hours.

I went to Windows 8 training yesterday and damn I am EXTREMELY impressed.

I was skeptical about it before.

It is crazy how they brought a full working os to a tablet and its not any different from the desktop version its exactly the same.

Lenovo Yoga 13.3 laptop/tablet video is out. Looks awesome. Has a patented 180 degree hinge. Rumors have the price around $1100 for the I5 ver.

Daring Fireball asked about storage space on the new 32GB tablet. MS responded back that after WindowsRT, Office and a "bunch of Apps" users can expect to have 20GB of free space on the 32 GB Surface.

Guess that explains why there's no 16GB version.

if there's a pretty much full-fledged windows OS 16gigs won't be enough anyways
even if you download custom lite version of win8 or sthing it's still gonna be pretty limited

Nice.. but now the keyboard surface is touching whatever surface you put it on when in tablet mode. ie scratches wear and tear on the keys/trackpad.

I like the Lenovo Lynx's scheme more where the screen is detachable but the Lynx doesn't have nice internals

So far it looks like the Sony DUO is my fav and the Acer W700 2nd
^sony

^acer comes with a dock

but they both have some significant negatives, so unless im blown away by them in person it'll be the wait for 2nd gen devices :/

keys are recessed so they don't touch anything.

If it's not running an Intel or AMD CPU it's running Windows RT. Looks like it will be Windows RT

Thanks, heard the rumors for it a long time ago, never really looked into it.

NCIX actually has it on preorder for 599.. pricey considering the market for tablet is dropping.

Other tablets main use is consumption.
Windows 8 tablets will be a lot more about productivity. Windows RT comes with Office.
