Keeping warm in the garage

I searched quite extensively for this topic but couldn't find anything, so forgive me and point me in the right direction if there's a past thread that I somehow missed.

The colder days are upon us and I'm not fortunate enough to have a heated garage to work in. I'm guessing that heating the entire garage to a comfortable temperature would consume quite a bit of energy, so perhaps what I need is a small heater that would direct heat just to where I physically am.

I'm not looking for a permanent installation, I want something along the lines of a portable/semi-portable solution.
Obviously something like this doesn't cut it. I have one for inside the house and it's utterly useless in the garage.

What do you guys use?
I'm looking at stuff at Costco, prices seem very reasonable if the products are good.
Heaters

I do have a 240V outlet but a refrigerator is using it right now, so if I can get by with 120V that'd be nice.

Single-car garage, by the way.

this, for warmth while still retaining full use of your arms:

and this

with the garage door closed, you'll be able to heat almost 3/4 of the garage with just one heat dish, provided it's big enough

put the 2 together and you'll probably be sweating

I would look at something with a Thermostat.
Seabreeze | SMART ThermaFlo Off The Wall Bed/Bathroom 1500 Watt | Home Depot Canada

This one seems interesting.

Econo-Heat | Econo-Heat 400 Watt Wall Panel Convection Heater | Home Depot Canada

If you can somehow get 30A/240v... Fan blown construction heaters are awesome.

Those are great... we have one at our cabin as "assistance" for the wood stove, and it gets the whole place toasty pretty darn quick. Fridge would probably be fine unplugged for a few hours while you use the outlet for the heater. WTF kind of fridge uses a 240 outlet anyway??

I was gonna say, radiant rather than blown heat will probably work best in this case, so you're directly warming the area you're in rather than blowing it around the whole garage and circulating the cold air in.

One other thing to consider, is look at improving the insulation - film over the windows, seal cracks, more/better/any insulation in the ceiling especially to prevent heat escaping. It will warm up a lot faster for you then.

Of course, you could always leave the car running with the windows open and the heater on full...

I dono... as long as you are under or close the the car i (personally) would not want that thing to melt my bumper or trim... A blow heater may not be as hot, but i find that there would be less chance of stuff going wrong.

I guess you could have one of those near your area have a blow heater under the car while it warms up..

2 suggestions that I know by personal experience will do the job.

More of a permanent heater that on full blast can heat my 2-car garage:
Overhead Radiant Heater | Princess Auto

Of if you want something more portable:
Bionaire Oil Filled Heater

The second one easily heats a 600sq. ft. basement suite no problems.
Hope these help. If they don't, go to Princess Auto as they have really good deals and everything is pretty much made for the garage.

X2 for an oil heater. It just takes a while to warm up, but once it does, it's great.

Had this thread been posted in the VLS Fashion Forum, somebody would have recommended a $2500 Dolce and Gabbana sweater along with $500 Paul Smith fleece pants and maybe a pair of furry Ferregamo loafers so he can wrench his bike/car in style.

Don't forget which website you're on. This is Revscene.net, son.

One important thing to remember with propane heaters: MAKE SURE YOU HAVE GOOD VENTILATION.

Benefit with electric heaters: you don't need to keep letting the cold in just to keep from suffocating.

Since you got 240 get a baseboard header and a wifi thermostat. So you can turn the heat on from anywhere.

Wifi Thermostat from Filtrete | The Home Depot - Model#: 3M-50

I have seen it at a local HD too.

Only reason I didn't post propane heaters were for:

1. Cost of propane/accessibility for it VS. electricity
2. Risk of fire
3. Risk of burning yourself by touching that thing when it's hot
