To Live and Drive in Vancouver

To live and drive in Vancouver - The Globe and Mail

Another frequent Vancouver sight is that of a Mercedes cruising through a red light without slowing down. The look on the driver's face is so serenely oblivious that it leaves everyone who is obeying the law wondering if they missed the memo.

"Tupac-To live and die in LA" came to my mind as soon as I read the thread title.

i think most of the comments have been blocked by staff already. i can imagine them being racist comments towards certain ethnic groups.

Lomac 11-28-2012 12:18 PM

It's a tongue-in-cheek article. Too many people are taking it too seriously... :lol

dryjesus 11-28-2012 12:22 PM

since when did knight st bridge merge into one lane? and since when was kitsilano a nude beach? so many things wrong with this article...

Lomac 11-28-2012 12:27 PM

It's called hyperbole...

hk20000 11-28-2012 12:53 PM

I don't know how placing the wreck beach in the wrong side of town is a hyperbole or serve any comedic functions though. That and highways that never crossed somehow has an "intersection"...

A life-long resident warns that if you drive 5 km/h over the limit don't be surprised if someone pulls up at the stop light and gives you the "Vancouver stare" - a double-shame-espresso glare that is a bolt of "Who do you think you are?" self-actualized passive-aggressive energy.
When has that ever happened? I dare someone that isn't a cop to bitch at me for speeding. :lol

The concept of satire and sarcasm has obviously been mastered artfully by everyone.

i was thinking more of the opposite...in that they bitch at you b/c you're going too SLOW...5km/hr over the speed limit is not enough and you'll get tailgated, honked, high beamed...passed and get the "vancouver stare" that you have the nerve to drive so slow and impede them.

yes it's tongue and cheek but i thought the mercedes and stare comment were pretty bang on :lawl:

vantrip 11-28-2012 02:12 PM

Some if this is very accurate: 'The dress code fluctuates between business casual and 1930s hobo.'

That sounds more like it.

It would work better if 50% of it wasn't a spot on representation of Vancouver...

See, that's why it's doubly ironic! It's sarcastic, within sarcasm...i donno if it was intentional or not lol.

it's all about gap control, if the guy beside you is slow speed up, if not slow down and make your intentions obvious for second guy.

i've been to montreal, it's worse there, understandably

I fukin hate this turn, countless times I been ran out of my lane because people are not paying attention to the lane, the faded marking on the road doesn't help.

one2one 11-28-2012 09:37 PM

I hardly drive anymore. When I go downtown I take my mtb suspension unlocked and I clocked in @ about 30 Km/h +- takes about 45 mins (Cut through the trails where there are no cars) from metrotown area to robson and burrard. Almost the same time as I would have taken a car to park and etc.

I believe road bikes are faster.

optiblue 11-30-2012 12:13 AM

I love bike lanes and public transit... Means less traffic on the road for me :troll:
