Tundra crewmax vs Dodge Ram I am a newbie in the truck market. Need some advice on which one would be easier to maintain ? Reliability ? |
year desired? Engine desired? Intentions of vehicle? So many details are required for a solid answer. Posted via RS Mobile |
used or new? if used what years are you looking at? which trims are you comparing looking at? are you getting a cummins powered ram or the hemi? are you looking to drive it stock or go into the aftermarket with mods such as lift, bumpers, etc? what intentions do you have with the vehicle (work, fun, camping, towing, daily driver, etc)? if going diesel/hd have you considered the other trucks? (f350 and sierra/silverado 2500)? shortbox, regular box, long box? crew cab? the more details you can give us the better. |
If your going the diesel route, The cummins motor w/ manual gear box. Most reliable combo out their for diesel engines. I had a 2001 ram with 490,000 kms, no problems. |
I am currently looking at 2012/2013 Tundra crewmax TRD mainly because they offer 0% financing and better trade in value for my A3. I guess short box will work for me, as long as I can fit my tool box for work and 4 wheels at the back will be fine. I will be using for towing a track car and mainly for daily use. |
They're blowing out the 2012 Diesel Rams for pretty cheap right now, if you can snag a manual one then I'd grab that. I have a 6spd 5.9L 24v and love it. |
I have a 2011 Ram with the Hemi and its a good truck, fast, no issues in over a year. Thats a lie, there was one thing but it was warrenty. The 2013 Rams are even better. The Tundra hasnt changed since like 2006 or 2007. The only cool thing about the Tundra is the rear window that goes down. I would take a 2013 Ram hands down. Over that I would get an Ecoboost F-150. |
Forget deals and go drive them. I hate hate HATE the Tundra interior. Havent seen the 2013s personally but they are even nicer then the 09-12 Rams, and I have had a lot of compliments on my interior. |
The Tundra has a nice interior for a daily, and it can handle a bit of light towing. The interior is the only point where the Tundra really shines though; the engine, transmission, and chassis pale in comparison to domestic trucks in terms of capacity and reliability. The TRD being offered with a 6-speed auto exemplifies that, and is why I would rule it out of consideration, towing is too hard on transmissions to accept that weak point. The Tundra also seems to have more annoying little electronic gadgets poised to break, my Dad has had a couple little issues with his already. There's definitely a place for a truck like the Tundra in the market, because if you just want to drive a big vehicle around it will probably serve you well. GM, Dodge, and Ford don't build nice DDs, they build work trucks, and offer packages to make them nice DDs as extra additions. The Silverado Duramax/Allison and Ram Cummins/Manual specifically are built for towing. The weak points have been virtually eliminated through decades of development. The Cummins is a true heavy duty diesel engine, and the manual transmissions are good. The Duramax is a great diesel engine, and the Allision transmission is a true heavy duty automatic transmission. Neither the Silverado or Duramax have as much stupid electronic, car type, junk added on, that break under heavy use. With a Denali or Long Horn package the interiors are competitive or better than the Tundra, but are also styled completely differently. If I were going to own a truck long term, and really use it, it would be a toss up between these two. |
What are you talking about? The new trucks are great daily drivers and incredibly comfortable. My buddy has a Tundra and its a POS in my opinion compared to my Ram. Sure its older, but the same year vs my Ram, I would still take the Ram. |
Yes, they do make great daily drivers. The Silverado, Ram, and F-Series in completely base form have pretty bland interiors with a great chassis though. Once you start adding options, the interiors get better and better quickly, only adding to the great chassis. They can make a good work truck, or a nice daily driver and a great work truck. The Tundra has a pretty decent interior even in base form, but the chassis is at the bottom of the class. Doesn't matter what you select on the option sheet, the chassis remains at the bottom. That's why I say, it's a nice daily... and that's about it. I've driven a late model Silverado, Ram, F150, and Tundra, and that's pretty much the order of how much I like them. |
Im not really sure how you can put a Chevy at the top. Their interior hasnt changed since about 2008. Its almost as bland as the Tundra. Im not going to argue though, even though I am. Its all a matter of personal opinion either way. |
I think I will switch my focuse on to Silverado and Ram. How about braking ? For a such heavy car or even under towing, who offers better safty ? Posted via RS Mobile |
I agree, the Ram has a better interior than the Silverado. Especially if you compare the Long Horn and Denali. I don't like the exterior styling of the current Ram incarnation though, whereas I love the exterior of the Silverado. Like I said, it's a toss-up which truck I like more, Dodge or Chevy. I'd probably choose the Chevy at base models, and Dodge at upper models. |
The Dodge has impressive brakes. I have also suprised a lot of vehicles with the power, such as some kids in a 01-03 Mustang GT, and an 03 SVT Lightning, on a closed course. Handles well too. I have the 3.92 gears in mine, tows 10,500lbs, and hauls ASS. It will hit the speed limiter with ease..............I hear. |
How much weight do you plan on towing? Will the trailer have electric brakes? How far do you plan on towing to? |
I am thinking about trading my Ram in on an Ecoboost. Tune and exhaust.....90rwhp, and a truck that runs 12s or close to it. Sweet. |
The interior on my 02 makes a lot of weird noise but it's also very simply and does everything I ask, nothing more nothing less. And my seats are pretty comfy. Don't be a poser though, get a real truck that burns the dirty stuff. |
my personal choice... would be to get a ford f350, ram 3500 and gmc 2500 in that order. i love toyotas through and through (toyota family) and they make the best light duty pick up (tacoma) since the demise of the ford ranger. however, when you want an HD truck you should go american. tundras are nice trucks in my opinion and they do nicely for those people who dont need a HD truck. if tools and some tires is all you need to haul around with an occasional trailer i'd say you should still consider it. the most important thing is DRIVE everything. go test drive every single truck that is on your list and don't simply dismiss a truck because people on the internet told you so. with cars, especially trucks you will find that there are more adamant brand whores out there than you can imagine. |
T4, if you'd opt for an F350 and Ram 3500, why would you choose a Sierra 2500 not 3500? IIRC, the Silverado is a little lighter, and because of that edges out the competitors on handling, stopping power, and towing capacity a bit. |
Cummins=30 years same basic design good Duramax=12 years same basic design good Powerstroke=9 years 3 complete redesigns 6.0/6.4/6.7 bad I'm not a brand loyalist. I'd like a cummins engine with allison transmission scaled down to a 4L and put into maybe a toyota body. |
New GM's are bloody expensive. When I was looking they wanted 50k for a 2011 3500 and dodge built me one for 55k for a 2012. Brand new GM's were starting in the 60-65 range... And they still have IFS, I fucking hate IFS... Quote:

Dad has a 09 Tacoma for DD and reliability has been good/alright (minor electronic radio problem, and replacement of water-pump under warranty). I recently saw these vids, and it seems like Toyota does make pretty good trucks vs American trucks. Like other people said, you should test-drive and see the one you like. |
