lol have never come across this thread before but yea, kind of a big jump reading it all right now from going there planning to return 3 months later to being engaged with a kid in the following posts lol good on ya |
holy sh*t why am i only seeing this thread for the first time. please keep this updated OP, this is good stuff! |
amazing story OP you asian? |
Nope. I'm white. |
awesome thread. are you able to speak and understand thai fluently now? |
OP if you don't mind me asking, how "rooted" were you in Vancouver? |
Thai is a very difficult language. I know the basics, but I couldn't sit down and converse with someone. My wife is pretty fluent in English so we use English at home which will be good for my son. Steve, I was born in Matsqui and lived in chilliwack until I was 10. Most of my family lives there. We bounced around a lot. Lived in Nelson, Okotoks, Lacomb, Rimbey, Fort Mac, and Grand Forks. Then I lived in kelowna for a while. After, I spent 4 years in the military. Moved back to kelowna, then to Port Moody. I was working at Image in Motion for a bit and then moved back to kelowna. Then I decided to come here. |
So besides teaching would there be any other potential to move up? I'm assuming everything is on your own and there isn't much in terms of health care or protection of you are unable to work? |
Most jobs are restricted to Thai's. I wouldn't recommend teaching unless you have a degree so you can work at an international school with decent wages. |
Interested to know your take on the death of the King? Whats the talk about how things will destabilize. I know quite a few people in South East Asia that are not planning any trips or business there soon. |

if in thailand, don't talk about the royal family, never say anything bad about it and you're fine. thailand and its people will be fine. i'll be there in a couple of weeks - won't be a problem. |
i was there (in bangkok) the night they announced the coupe....to say nothing changed is completely incorrect. maybe from a business stand point but from a day to day for the first while things definitely changed....and going again earlier this year things are slowly coming back to what they were before but not completely. the military has cleaned up bangkok quite a bit of the street vendors and that kind of stuff. atleast that's what we saw. and we've been in and out of that city about 15 times over the last 3 years. |

i didn't see much materially different, but i suppose it depends on your perspective. of course the day of is a shock to the system, but shit settles down real quick and life carries on - as will happen now. |
Still disagree but after a year curfews etc were still going on.....not as drastic as before obviously, but they were still there. They had to relax to a certain degree for the tourist areas but Kao San Road that was a 24 hour all day everyday party immediately went to 9pm after the curfew and still a year later was only "supposed" to be open till midnight. Music was off 100% as cops drove up and down making sure of it. |
bump* would be cool for an update. |
Great thread. I'm also preparing to make the movie abroad. Thinking of Vietnam the end of the year. |
Year 5. Still enjoying my life here. I haven't really had any desire to return to Canada to be honest. Loving being a father. My son is obsessed with motorcycles/cars. Here's mostly a photo update of what I've been doing. http://i1213.photobucket.com/albums/...ps5k4hjrlr.jpg http://i1213.photobucket.com/albums/...psworqentq.jpg http://i1213.photobucket.com/albums/...psjtai34lk.jpg http://i1213.photobucket.com/albums/...psllqlwprb.jpg http://i1213.photobucket.com/albums/...psciosv1hc.jpg http://i1213.photobucket.com/albums/...psbinvtogj.jpg http://i1213.photobucket.com/albums/...psd0pbby9f.jpg http://i1213.photobucket.com/albums/...psnc0x1bwx.jpg http://i1213.photobucket.com/albums/...ps3glzmejh.jpg http://i1213.photobucket.com/albums/...psu4axxml7.jpg http://i1213.photobucket.com/albums/...pselgsckpr.jpg http://i1213.photobucket.com/albums/...psldi5hcjo.jpg |

shit talk about a good time and great pictures, my dad retired and is living in Thailand 6 months of the year now and beyond loves it. He's been back for a couple months and is already sick of it here and wants to go back. |
do you have any knowledge on trying to get jobs in the construction industry in thailand? i want to move there so bad but my wife wants to make sure we have a solid work plan before we do. |
Any labor type job is usually done by migrant workers from surrounding countries with minimum safety, low pay and working in the sun all day. This is why it's difficult to move here for most people. For example, being a welder in Thailand would be considered to be a low job. Quite the opposite in Canada. |
