For a starting price (in the US I presume) of $30k... it is a great price-point.
At $34k in Canada? Still a great price point.
I think MB is trying to win the "unit sales" war... to topple BMW.
They need a low-price entry car (not the mini Benz B class wagon) just like what BMW did with the 1 series, and like the article mentioned, to woo younger buyers.
These younger buyers, in turn, would hopefully fall in love with the brand and buy more MBs as they grow older and more affluent.
This sounds like a great plan.
They borrowed heavily from the CLS class which is at least 3 times more expensive. I would cringe if I had a CLS, when the CLA comes along. Maybe, the CLS sales were so low, that MB didn't mind borrowing own styling queues from the CLS.
In any case, the CLA's styling looks like a winner. Or... maybe it is just the red colour?

I think it also has to do with the fact that a lot of younger buyers love the look of the CLS, but can't afford one. Therefore MB is capitalizing on this fact, not necessarily that the CLS is doing bad.
I personally like the CLS a lot, I'd like one but given my age I'd prefer to stick with something a little more sporty then luxury. Which is why I'm interesting in the CLA AMG.

Owning a CLA will never compare with or be as prestigious with owning a CLS. The CLS makes a statement. Since they are expected to sell in higher numbers, it just wouldn't have that exclusivity status that the CLS commands and people with that kind of money desire. Have you sat in one? my god it is like sitting in a comfortable and spacious tank whereas the CLA will probably be cramped. Plus with all the publicity, everyone knows its a 34k Benz and the buyers are price conscious looking for bang for the buck.
It's also not a shocker that many auto companies diffuse the styling ques of higher models into their lower ones. That's nothing new here and I believe it has little to do with CLS sales being low (they aren't intended to be mass sold like the CLA - the buyer alone is in a completely different class).

Estimated Arrival and Price: The 2014 Mercedes-Benz CLA45 AMG will debut at the New York auto show in March before hitting dealerships later this year as a 2014 model. Pricing hasn’t been set yet, but expect stickers starting close to $50,000—a nearly $20K premium over the 208-hp
I've gotta say, this thing is starting to grow on me. When I first saw the interior, I thought that the centre stack looked more at home in something like the new Fords, but I'm beginning to like it. Even without the AMG package, it's actually pretty nice looking.

Wow, 26.1psi of boost pressure in the AMG. Wonder how big the turbo is to flow that much. Watch C-lais start throwing in 87 octane. *knock knock knock knock knock knock knock knock knock* and BOOM goes the dynamite.
