Nanaimo Island

I plan to hit up Nanaimo Island during spring break in March (16-22/23) with my girlfriend!
Going to hit up Tofino right away, and make my way back, can you guys recommend some fun inexpensive things we can do there during this time? I'm aware its going to still be a little cold!
Trying to make a plan of national parks I should be heading to, hiking areas I should be heading to, and hot springs!
Any suggestions guys?

Any specific hotels you guys recommend?

Any specific restaurants are a must-try?

Meant to type vancouver island instead of nanaimo island, was baked, sorry!

coombs just past parksville is kinda nice, little market area. Not sure what time of year it all gets fired up though.
Little qualicum falls and englishman river falls are nice to see and on the way.

Those are all awesome places in the summer, but aren't they all wet and muddy now?

While it's not in Tofino, if you want to be in and around the Nanaimo'ish area, the Tigh-Na-Mara resort is pretty nice.

Be sure to stop at Cathedral Grove (or MacMillan Provincial Park). It has those monster old growth trees. If anything, it's almost better to be there when it's wet/dreary out. Less people, and the trees are just as awesome. Plus, even if it IS raining, the canopy of trees does help keep the brunt of the rain off. You can't miss it on your way to/from Tofino.

Coombs is okay... that time of year could be iffy, as the market might not even be open. It's on the way, and really isn't out of the way as far as a detour goes.

Englishman River Falls is sweet, and a nice spot to check out, but like Skinny said, this time of year, it might be a bit sloppy. Qualicum Falls is a nice spot too. In the summer, it's always cool watching the derp teenagers cliff jump into the pools.

Parksville/Qualicum areas are nice, just lots of old people lol. But they're right on the water, so if the weather is good, they're nice spots to grab a coffee/drink and chill by the water.

Horne Lake Caves is another cool place. A bit off the beaten path (but still close to Parksville), and tricky to find, so if you're interested in going to check out the caves, google that shit before you leave lol.

*** For the LOVE of all that is holy... Do NOT stay in Port Alberni. If you think Nanaimo is a dump, Port Alberni makes Nanaimo seem like West Van. It's a giant shithole, so don't waste your time.***

^ Agreed.

Nanaimo is not that bad... and if you do think it's bad, you obviously haven't been to many other cities on the Island.

Because my in-laws live on one of the gulf islands, I'm in Nanaimo more then I'd like to admit But over the years, it's grown on me quite a bit. I would certainly rather live there, before most of the suburbs of the Lower Mainland.

Thanks for the burger joint suggestion Manic! Definitely gonna hit that up next time I'm in town!
