LONDON, Dec 9 (Reuters) - Formula One will award double points for the last race of the season in an attempt to keep championships undecided until the very end, the sport's governing body announced on Monday.

The International Automobile Federation (FIA) said the change, after a season of record domination by Red Bull and quadruple champion Sebastian Vettel, was immediately applicable and would "maximise focus on the championship until the end of the campaign".

Vettel, 26, won the last nine races of 2013 and wrapped up his fourth title with three rounds to spare.

Next year's season-ender is in Abu Dhabi on Nov. 23.

The FIA also announced, after a meeting in Paris of its Formula One commission and the F1 strategy group, that the principle of a global cost cap had been unanimously approved, with the aim of introducing it from January 2015.

The Paris-based body said a working group, made up of the FIA, commercial rights holder and team representatives, would be established to work on having regulations approved by the end of June next year.

A change to the system of driver numbers was agreed, with drivers in future carrying their number through their career in Formula One rather than taking a new one every year depending on where they finished.

The number one will be reserved for the world champion, should he decide to use it.

Should more than one driver choose the same number, preference will be given to the man who finished highest in the previous year's championship.

The principle of a five-second penalty for minor infringements was also accepted for 2014, with teams to discuss how it should be applied. (Editing by Ed Osmond)

Not gonna lie, that's a pretty stupid rule. Awarding double points for the season ending race..I hope they scrap it.

E-40six 12-10-2013 04:55 PM

I would laugh so hard next year if vettel is neck and neck in the championship and go on to win the last race

radioman 12-10-2013 04:56 PM

No one race should be weighted more in points. Plain and simple.

StylinRed 12-10-2013 06:53 PM

that's like family feud where the last round is worth a million points

stupid idea

What would be funny is if he was behind in the standings and he won the championship because of the double points.

Stupid rule indeed!

I like the idea of having a driver having the same number throughout their career though!

Rich Sandor 12-11-2013 02:18 PM

Stupid rule, here's why:

a) Assume it's a season like 2009, where everyone is super tight in points right to the end.. out of 4 drivers, whoever wins the race wins the championship. Double points would not make a difference.

b) Assume it's a season like 2013, where Vettel is SO FAR ahead in points, the Double point would not matter.

c) Assume is a random season where someone has fought hard to get a 40-50 point lead over 2nd place guy in the WDC. On the last race, the WDC leader gets crashed out by someone else, and now the 2nd place guy gets the WDC *ONLY* because of double points.

Think about this point above. HOW HARD IS IT TO GET A 50 POINT LEAD? You would have to win 2 races outright with the next guy not finishing within the points, or if the guy in second place in the WDC gets 2nd EVERY TIME to your first place, you would have to beat him at least EIGHT TIMES to get a 50 point lead!!! All those EIGHT wins over him would be completely erased if you got damaged on the last race of the year.

Complete BULLSHIT.

Stupidest thing I've read in the last few days... my question is, WHY??????

Lol...pretty sure everyone knew Perez was gonna get the seat

If Kobayashi got the seat than it would've been a good guess ;)

Cool video RBR put out the other day.

I hate watching Seb run away during the race and more or less win the race within the first three laps, but he's a genuinely good guy, super down to earth, and I'm sure we call all relate to him with out love for anything with a motor.

HonestTea 12-14-2013 01:04 AM

I'll call it right now, Brawn is gonna go to McLaren-Honda in 2015.

What will be interesting at McLaren is Button in 2015. If Alonso has a fallout with Ferrari, I think McLaren will grab him as they've made it clear that they would love to have Alonso back. I don't think they'll kick Magnussen out after 1 year as this is their Hamilton2.0. Button has a huge fan base in Japan though and he has a Japanese supermodel girlfriend, it's hard to see Button not get a drive at a McLaren-Honda team.

Edit: I've read somewhere that Ron and Martin has two completely different views on how to manage the team and what direction McLaren should go.

Lotus not too happy with 2014 rule changes.. :lawl:

StylinRed 12-18-2013 09:32 AM

2014 was already a joke because of the engines but these circus rules make it even worse

I'd like to see rule #4 from Lotus applied :lol
