In the last month, I think I figured it out. With any investment, you need to set some clear targets and goals, if you don't have any targets, it's hard to know when to take profits. I use this same strategy with my stock market portfolio, why didn't I use the same strategy with crypto? Duh..
What you have to do is create a portfolio mix. Once you do that, taking profits is easy. Now, this portfolio mix is going to differ dependent on your risk profile.
What are the different types of risk profiles? You can look at them here: http://canadiancouchpotato.com/wp-co...eries-2017.pdf
^that's pretty standard in the financial industry. (Bond Index Fund = CASH/USDt for the crypto space)
For me, i'm towards the Assertive side. What does that mean for crypto?
20% = USDt
This means, at ALL times 20% of my portfolio is in USDt (or cash).
Fundamentally, everyone should be holding coins they see long term potential, this helps with your mix.
Right now, this is my mix:
"Asset Allocation"
40% ADA
20% USDt
20% NEO
20% alts
^ What does this mean?
Q: What do you do when the market goes up?
A: You rebalance your portfolio and take profits into USDt
ie. At one point my USDt allocation was down to like 5%, this meant all of my alts were up. I need to rebalance. I took profits from ADA, NEO, and all my alts. I sold those and bought USDt until my USDt allocation was back up to 20%. When I rebalanced, my portfolio looked exactly as it did above.
Because my risk profile is 20% in cash, I need to maintain that, otherwise I would need to change my risk profile.
Q: What happens when the market drops?
A: You rebalance your portfolio and move USDt into Alts
ie. The market is tanking right now, so my USDt position is up to like 40%. I could hodl right now, but my risk profile is more assertive, so I need to get rid of USDt. So I started to slowly buy more and more ALTS to meet my asset allocation.
Hopefully, this helps some of you guys. Too many of the people I talk to are ALL IN on crypto, that's great and all, but that's way too risky. If you create a proper asset allocation, then taking profits is easy and when the market is down, you have funds to buy alts at a discount. | This formula sounds good for STOCK portfolio...
For crypto, sounds like you are taking profits to early

Asia still dominates in crypto-trading by volume, accounting for the vast majority of money flowing in and out. Guess what is coming up in 3 weeks?
Lunar New Year. Lots of money is flowing back to fiat to buy presents and plane/train tickets.
People spend a TON of money on travel and presents during Lunar New Year. This is their Christmas. This is also the largest mass migration of people on the planet, occurring over two weeks. Projections are for $100 billion USD in spending. [ https://www.forbes.com/sites/ywang/2...#3a6d5502999a]
Remember that the crypto market is antithetical to the stock market. Stocks boom when business is booming during the holidays. Crypto investors are retail investors, not Wall Street investors. Retail investors sell during holidays, thus the crypto market falls.
This selloff has happened exactly 3 weeks before Lunar New Year each of the last 4 years.

So, everybody chill out for a week, the bulls will be back by February. You can't fault these Chinese and Korean bros for taking major gains to buy some cool shit for their families. Hell, if you want to, buy up their cheap coins in the meantime. https://www.reddit.com/r/Bitcoin/com...r_the_dip_and/ | complete bullshit written obviously by a westerner.
Chinese culture has been and will always be about saving for the future. 90% of the population does not live pay cheque to pay cheque. If they are poor enough that you need to cash out your crypto porfolio to buy gift and ticket home, they will not involve themselves in a highly speculative and technically illegal market in China.
Sure a small percentage of lower class folk might be involve in the market but that number is so small its a drop in the bucket. All the restriction in China right now has decrease the amount of crypto investor domestically and basically made this a game for the relatively rich folks. Again for these folks if you do not have enough money in your fiat account to buy ticket for a trip home, they simply do not invest.
complete bullshit theory. next plz

If these ledgers were so transparent, wouldn't it be possible to see where the money is going?

Also, taking profits "early" is an arbitrary thing. When ADA was over $1, did I take profits "too early"?
I'm just following my risk profile. In any market, you need a proper strategy. Because I held USDt, I was able to buy alts cheap without injecting new cash.
For most of the members here, who was able to buy cheap alts without putting more money in?
It's fine if you can constantly put more money in, but for most people, they can't just keep putting new money in.
Investing in stocks and crypto isn't any different.
I don't re-balance everyday, I rebalance probably at least once a month to make sure i'm on track.
Without a clear target, you will never take profits.
edit;
I should add, when i'm taking profits, that doesn't mean i'm selling my entire position. I'm just rebalancing that position to my risk tolerance. If my allocation to ADA is 40%, then I need to try to keep my allocation to that percentage. My entire portfolio still grows, it just grows at my desired level of risk.

You are better off using a site like nanopool. you will make more money that way.

Any recommendation for buying the dip?
Still have 5BTC left, so the idea is to go from BTC-->xxx
But BTC seems to be taking most of the drop.

^ There is a holding period for withdrawals.
Made an account with them last night as well. Been waiting a good 2 weeks for Quadriga verification, not that approval would do squat right now considering nearly all the funding options are blocked.

Quadriga is fckd. Coinsquare allows you to be fully verified using Equifax Quad still has to manually verify the account. It's like a 3 to 4 week waiting period.
