Being vital for emergencies is a bit of a bad argument.
A better argument would be that a cellphone is hardly a cellphone anymore, and it is now a personal device that does way more than talk and text. Hell, I run my business from my phone.

I loathe people who talk and drive (I was once sandwiched between a SUV and a Civic because the Civic driver prioritized talking on his phone over paying attention to his driving) but I am definitely not in favour of giving Big Brother more arbitrary power over us.

It's like when they first started seizing vehicles for going 40 over, Everyone was in an uproar and then it became "normal". What's next is what we need to be worried about.

can i just state something.
I eat my mcd meals on the go everytime i go out to a job site etc.
I eat with one hand, drive with another while chatting up with my passenger.
Im constantly digging for fries, shoving that burger IN MY FUCKING FACE.
AND to top it off, chat and smoke n drink w.e while drive.
thats ok.
im on the PHONE 1 hand driving the other hold it towards me with speakers on.
that is NOT OK
dafaq?
ps: nasty fart girls putting on make up at red light/driving.
is OKAY.................. srsly?

I am not in favour of anyone seizing a personal or business phone. Here is my thing, what does a phone have to do with the motor vehicle act?
You want to talk on your phone and drive, no problem. how about a 24 hr license suspension. The next day you can talk/browse on your phone from the bus or taxi on your way to work.
24 hrs without a phone that can be used to communicate/do business can actually be very costly. I know a few people that without a cell phone they would not be able to work at all.
24 hrs without a license on the other hand. There are other ways to acquire transportation.

Take away their license but I still fail to see how intruding on someones right to have a phone have anything to do with the MVA.
Anyone else notice how cops love to use the excuse that they have 'special training' to be able to use electronics while they are driving? Why isn't this 'training' readily available to the general public? If driving with your cellphone impairs your brain just like alcohol that means that cops also have 'training' to feel no effects of alcohol?

seriously though, if they do this it should be mandatory for cops to use bluetooths. For every 3 or 4 people I see using a cellphone, I always see one cop talking on his phone driving (even swerving while doing so)

So should we not impound the cars of people who drink and drive because they need them to get to work?
Maybe we shouldn't imprison murderers because they have a family to support?
When you commit a crime you chose to accept the risk of punishment. Don't like the punishment? Don't do the crime.

So they take away your car. You get caught using a phone well driving you are not banned from using any phone anywhere for 24 hours.

The thing is they CANNOT prove you were on your phone while driving unlike alcohol.
What are they going to do? Carry cameras with them and snap a picture? Pay a fine to release your cellphone back to you?
You can't have two sets of laws for two different scenarios. Alcohol applies to both parties while cellphone use does not.

Just because we have a law doesn't mean their always 'right' or appropriate. For example, in the Morgentaler case nobody on the jury would convict the abortion doctor even though they knew he was guilty. Response? That's what the studies say.
And yea, they punishment is proportionate. They're not giving you 20 years in jail or cutting off your hand, they're taking away an item used to commit a crime for 24 hours. Quote:
