When I had my tuned WRX STI my experiences and mileage (no pun intended) varied drastically based on source/octane.

My preferences were;

-Petro Canada 94 (I REALLY miss this being an option!)
-Chevron 94

I ran US Chevron 92 countless times but never noticed a difference between this and Canadian 94 so I find it very interesting that so many people in this thread do.

Mileage was comparable and performance was nearly identical.

I HATED Husky 94. It was AWFUL....

Not only did I genuinely take a 15-20% hit in fuel economy (I did the math on this) but it felt like I had an extra 500lbs in the car with me based on power delivery, etc...

For the bike I prefer :

-Chevron 94
-Shell 91
-Petro Canada 91

Husky 94 is garbage. Makes my dads 03 cobra run like shit compared to the very first tank of Petro Canada 94. Car stopped bogging and cutting out at 4000 rpm and going through 02 sensors every few months.. sucks trying to get any o2 sensors for it.

So for a new car like bmw x1, does it really matter which gas station I go to for 92 especially in the states? For example: is Shell 92 better than 92 found in a no name gas station that I found in bellingham? Also how about superstore 92 vs chevron 92 vs shell 92?

chevron 94 > timpos love for gtr

IMASA 06-07-2017 05:17 PM

Not sure if anyone noticed, but for some reason, Chevron 94 was really good back in March /April. I was getting my tuner to redo a 94+methanol tune and I was able to run about the same boost/timing as on my 94 + 20% E85 tune.

Now it seems Chev 94 is back to its usual crappy self. My last full tank had pretty bad knock in the upper boost/timing ranges. I tried 2 half tanks from different stations in Vancouver and Richmond and both had the same negative results.

320icar 06-07-2017 05:58 PM

Yes I noticed 100%. I got a new tune on my focus and on chevron 94 it was adding up to 4° of timing advance on WOT 4th gear pulls. Now all through May (even trying different chevron stations) it's retarding up to 2° timing on the same pull. I'm glad someone else has noticed as I'm kinda pissed

IMASA 06-08-2017 08:02 AM

I talked to other speed3 folks also currently getting tuned by Stratified and they're seeing the same results with the current 94 that is available.

Since the new E85 place is now open on Saturdays, I may just run 5L of E85, which should be like 94 E10 and not require a dedicated E85 tune and require that I run an E85 blend all the time. I stopped running an E85 blend becasue refueling and mixing gas was such a hassle.

I filled with Chev 94 last week in Pitt Meadows and noticed that my STI pulled its own timing-- had this happen before, and immediately knew it was the shit-tastic gas.
I'm now boosting at wastegate 10psi instead of the usual 17.8psi. The car is a stock STI, and it seems to love Shell 91 over the Chevron 94...

320icar 06-08-2017 11:40 AM

My gas light just came on. Suggestions where to fill up in Richmond? Tuned for 93, but don't want to run chevron 94 on this next tank.

Bumping this back up for reference. For people with turbo cars specifically, is it Chevron or Shell 92 that's close enough to 94?

320icar 11-07-2017 09:59 AM

Last time in the summer before I traded in my ST, no shell v power was not a substitute for chev 94

phangsta 12-17-2017 12:07 AM

Our 94 is comparable to cali's 91

Expresso 01-18-2018 10:28 PM

Any updates from you guys still data logging?

Some interesting points in this thread. You all know that there is little difference in the fuels you purchase in the lower drainland right? The 89, 91 and 92 regardless of station are all from the same source. A good friend works for scamp and he delivers to all the stations from the same main/holding tanks. We had a great discussion about fuel contamination and delivery and many other variables one day while watching him offload at Boundary Bay (CZBB) with 100LL. One of the few bastions left where there is NO ethanol and the octane ratings and cleanliness are maintained. Sadly you cant buy 100LL unless its going straight into the tanks in the wing of your plane!

I have noticed very little difference between 89-92 at any of the local stations as a result. The only time I see/feel anything is when comparing to the US 92 in the 135 and the GLH. The bike however HATES ethanol, as did the carbs on my previous beast.

I generally dislike the fact that they shove 10% subsidized ethanol down our throats. Now we have to burn more of it to go the same distance (3-4mpg drop on the 135). Now we all know that our fuel costs are primarily tax, and that its a percentage of the total cost right? Of course they want you to burn MORE fuel! Thats more tax revenue. It has nothing to do with the environment. Its all greed. Plain and simple. As such, I'll glad cross the 49th and fill up.

I haven't really noticed any mileage difference between when i head to the states and fill up (and jerry cans for another full tank) vs filling up here. Maybe a .5L/100km difference

this is in a brand new ram 1500 hemi

i did notice a big difference between summer and now winter, gone up around 2L/100km

320icar 01-30-2018 10:58 AM

My usage went up about 2L/100km as well. but I assume that was because of sticky winter tires and ski attachment on roof rack

blkgsr 01-30-2018 01:16 PM

i will say i did add in heavier all terrain tires in October the greatest increase was definitely the colder weather

forcedot 03-03-2018 05:06 PM

I remember reading a study that found ethanol mixes to be better for acceleration and engine efficiency, but the 94 does not contain any ethanol.

prudz 03-26-2018 02:39 PM

Anyone know who supplies superstores fuel? Also if their 91 contains ethanol?

Old thread I know, but I found one petro Canada in BC with 94. Any pros to using it over chevron 94?

Edit: never mind. Just looked on their site and 94 at petro contains ethanol.

Even if it contains ethanol, I wouldn't really mind if it is:

a) no higher than E10
b) can provide the engine performance that I am after

Since you're located in Kelowna, I suppose this Petro Canada station with 94 gas is in the Okanagan? At any rate, I'd be rather skeptical though if it is the only station in the entire province to offer 94 Petro Canada gas. How does it even obtain its supply when the mother company isn't providing it to the rest of the province?

It’s in Osoyoos actually. It lists the location I found and one in Oliver as well. I assume to tap into area 27 vehicles, as there is only a chevron in Oliver. The next closest would be Penticton.

I just searched locations near Osoyoos

Are there any stations out there that carry E10 92+ octane fuel?
