Seriously...look at all NDP provincial governments. Bob Rae in the 90's just died in his one term(in honesty, I don't think he was a true NDP premier). posted a 10 billion deficit in one year.

Nova Scotia is currently under NDP government, and they are doing "ok". Increased HST by 2 points to 15% to pay for the tax and spend policies though.

Manitoba did well under NDP.

BC? Well, we all know the story there.

The ID laws in Canada are a lot more lax than in the US, where states have required photo ID at the polls to suppress minority voters. They may not be able to afford ID or know how to get them, and generally lean Democrat.

In a day where I have been continually arguing for Vancouver to be more business friendly, I don't feel adding to corporate tax levels are the way to go. Then get hit again on personal earnings(although, I feel those rates are still acceptable)

So this covers some of the 'tax'...let's see the 'spend'.

Not completely unexpected for income taxes to rise. I think the spend side is more important...

I'm really considering voting for an independent in my riding this time around. I just don't know if I'll be wasting a vote or not if he's not going to win...

CTV news was saying its basically the same plan as the Liberal plan except with the addition of the tax on banks

And both parties will be running deficits as the Liberals have been for the past few years although the liberals claim that wont happen this year


and its said spending will probably lean towards post secondary education (student aid etc)

I can commend them on at least being upfront BEFORE the elections and actually saying they will increase taxes.

The problem I see with the Liberals is that they cheated their numbers saying there would NOT be running a deficit as they are planning to sell off a bunch of land....so, what happens next year? and, that year after? That, at the very least is a concern to me.

I commend the NDP for not taking that (selling land) into account and slowly edging out of a deficit budget.

I think when (lets face it, they will win) the NDP takes over, we will see a more fiscally conservative NDP then we ever have before. The NDP is well known for their socialist tendencies and reckless spending....I think (HOPE) it will be different this time.

My wifes Union has started calling her with the, "we hope your going to vote this way" calls. Send a pamphlet in the mail but for baby jebus in the mangers sake don't try and pressure over the phone, one can vote however the fuck they want.

Today I was asked to run for the Liberal party for Nanaimo. If I run I will be going up against Leonard Krog. Leonard Krog MLA - Home page I told them I would have a answer by tomorrow.

I'm not somebody big but I did run for city council in 2008 and lost. I also am a member of the Liberal party. If i run I know I will have a slim to no chance of winning. The riding that I would be running in stops across the street from where I live. I still think the Times of India awards were a waste of money.

Well, they are cutting it kind of close...as you have:

no office.
no staff.
no money.

Offices are easy...staff is a challenge, but getting people to give you money is a killer. The party will send some over, but I doubt much based on last elections results.

Would be an amazingly fun experience though, and raise your profile for other political runs.

Office is covered if I run. I will be sharing it with the candidate running in the riding next to me. I will be getting help with raising money. Enough to cover signs and other material. Staff wise I will be getting help They already have someone to help me run my campaign.

I have know idea were to begin but for #3 I don't even think the awards have been broadcast yet. Unlike most award shows that are broadcast live.I don't think we will see any real economic benefit from the awards. Many Indian films have already been shot in BC.

Well shit man...do it!

As far as I'm concerned, you should never be afraid to have your posts from an online forum scrutinized. I think that the voting public has a right to know what politicians are really thinking.

NDP promises tax hikes if elected
Corporations, banks, polluters and the wealthy will pay more if the BC NDP wins the provincial election.



The party's fiscal plan, unveiled at Simon Fraser University Thursday, calls for: a one point rise in the corporate tax rate from 11% to 12%, reinstating a 3% bank tax, expanding the carbon tax to include vented oil and gas emissions, and raising the personal income tax rate to 19% on incomes over $150,000 a year.

The party, if elected, also plans to run the same $800 million deficits it alleges the ruling BC Liberals are hiding. In total, the NDP would run nearly $2 billion in deficits over the next three years until the party, it says, would balance the budget in year four of a NDP government.

"We’re looking at those who have a little more to give a little more,” NDP finance critic Bruce Ralston told reporters.

But the BC Liberals aren't buying it, and Finance Minister Mike de Jong blasted the plan as "the same old NDP."

He said the NDP's plan was an attack on business and successful British Columbians and won't ever be balanced.

"The bottom line is this: The NDP is afraid to show British Columbians their bottom line," de Jong said in a statement. "They want to hike taxes on people who create jobs in BC.

"You can't have a fiscal plan that doesn't actually have any targets, but it's not surprising as balancing the budget wasn’t important to Adrian Dix the last time he was in the Premier’s Office and it is clear that it isn’t important to him if he returns."

The fiscal plan is a broad look at how the NDP will pay for its election platform, which will be detailed during the campaign. On Thursday, the party promised a childcare and early-education plan and a poverty-reduction strategy.

Earlier this week, NDP Leader Adrian Dix proposed increasing the tax credits for TV and film productions in the province to 40% of labour costs.

Current polls show the NDP with a sizeable lead over the Liberals.

Premier Christy Clark is expected to outline her party's election platform Sunday during a 30-minute TV address.

The campaign for the May 14 election officially begins Tuesday.
