Will re-charging a working A/C system make it colder?
 

With the last couple days being so warm, I an just curious if re-charging a perfectly working A/C system it with fresh R134 will make it blow colder or is it only necessary if there is a leak and it is low or it is so old that it is blowing warm?

i.e. does A/C refrigerant gradually get less and less effective to the point it's no longer cold, or does it stop working suddenly altogether (either due to age or a problem with the system)?

There's kits to "refresh" A/C systems out there, but if you're that worried about having low refrigerant, have your system pressure and leak tested.

The thing is I've only had the car a few months so I don't know how "cold" it should be. It blows cold just fine, but was wondering if it would get colder with 'new' refrigerant.

Not so concerned about it having a leak or being low since it IS blowing cold, moreso if old refrigerant gets less effective over time.

I used one of these kits on my old e28. It worked absolutely fantastic for 3 months til it all leaked out again.

If your system gas been well maintained, and just blows warm then yes these kits can work. But it there are leaks, or it needs to be re oiled or you think it hasn't been touched in the cars 25 year life span, might be worth taking it to a shop

When you get your A/C serviced/charged at a shop, they should be able to tell you if there is a leak or anything because they will be evacuating the system. If vacuum leaks during evacuation hold, further diagnosis will be needed to find the leak before refilling it back up with refrigerant.

refrigerant doesn't loose it's ability to cool... if it's charged to spec, it'll blow cold... it's not like most other fluids that lose their ability to function/protect/lubricate when it's worn out...

any shop that does AC should be able to recover your refrigerant out of your car, measure the amount that comes out, and then do a vacuum hold test to check for leaks and boil off any moisture in the lines... then recharge to spec... most places charge somewhere beween $140-$200
