I don't see IKEA giving in very much. I still can't believe IKEA is owned by one family. It's pretty amazing. | LOL this is worse than walmart how? If you have some time to kill please watch the walmart documentary "The high cost of low prices"

iirc, they start about at about $15\hr which wasn't too bad while going to uni.
They also had this "quiet" room where employees could go to at any time during their shift to relax if it was too busy (was not considered break time)....free food, decent discount, and they were super supportive of university, ie: taking time off for exams, etc. Fellow employees were nice and normal...bosses were approachable, etc.
Also, he (we) would get called from the RCMP some times for body finds or human burial excavations and they always let him go...even 1\2 into a shift.
They never pushed customer service so there was no pressure to be "friendly" and up-selling which was a BIG difference coming from an ex-safeway employee. They don't make you eat, sleep, and shit Ikea.
He only ended up staying only about 6 months because he graduated and started working in his chosen field.

He only ended up staying only about 6 months because he graduated and started working in his chosen field. | Funny how often people (who don't even work at these places) just look at the money and not at "perks" like working conditions, and then get all bent if pay does match up to THEIR (completely uninvolved) idea of what it "should" be.
$15/hr to start is pretty good, really - buddy of mine works at Save-On Foods and I think is only just making $17-something now, after close to 10 years... I think he started off around $12. It's been largely casual and swing shifts for those years, too: three days of graveyards, then two of afternoons, then two more of night shift, then a day off, then back to mornings again... lotta turnover of younger staff, so he's always having to train noobs. Never heard much good about the work conditions, and they didn't get discounts on anything.
People whining for more at Ikea need to take a good look at some of the alternatives - sounds like they could have it a lot worse.

I know some people who would be happy with $8/hour. But they mostly live in the US where restaurant owners get away with paying $3/hour. Land of the free.

Plus, they have a lot of family day parties for the staff...offer friends and family of employees to work cash-in-hand for inventory days, moving departments is easy, and you are able to sign up to travel all over the world to open new stores.
I was at Safeway for close to 7 years. Started at $7\hr. When I left, I was making $9.25 and I was a supervisor who did the 3:45-12:15 closing shifts....was pathetic. However, back then it was the norm was going to HS and Uni...Couldn't do much better than $8\hr.

I worked at Richmond IKEA back in 2000, made like 11.50/hr which was a decent wage for a customer service position. They didnt have all these family days, free food etc I'm reading about here so things must've changed...
I did develop the yellow fever working there though.

I get paid 10.25 to work at Canada Place under federal work regulations. Ikea should fire everyone so I can get the job.

Yeah dude...do they want to unionize the Coquitlam location so they can get paid less?
Or, do they do the starbucks thing and just pay the rest the same money without having union dues?

Looks like the Ikea in Richmond got screwed over by the unions - the only Ikea to be unionized, from what I've read here. Forever they will be screwed with negotiations, strikes, walkouts, and lockouts. Not only that, the employees have to pay union dues.
Meanwhile, workers at the other Ikea locations have it made. Decent pay, good working conditions, etc.
Instead of trying to unionize the other Ikea locations, the people working at the Richmond location should consider opting out of the union.
Perhaps Ikea wanted the Richmond location to be unionized to show the others how fucked up a union environment can be, LOLOLOLOLOL.

Restaurant/Deli makes far less than the floor people, so not all sections are paid that well.

Pay levels are based on seniority, not skill or intelligence or performance.

ikea food is retarded..if you want cheap decent hot dogs go to costco, $1.50 you get a hot dog that's like having 3 of the same size ikea dogs and you also get a drink. Costco ftw

^ But I can't get my MALM bed frame while I have my 1 dollar yogurt/ice cream and .75 hot dog at Costco. Your argument is invalid.
Off topic, the Richmond IKEA Hot Dogs suck, they aren't on those heated rollers like the others. I blame the union. Non-unionized IKEA hot dogs taste better.

Ikea food is alright but its barely passable as "restaurant" cuisine. Its a cafeteria that re-heats items so I'm not shocked that they only pays around the $13 range.
That being said....for the cost, it is a great deal! Can't beat the $1 breakfast!
