Slight update to the 2ZR being used since '08, and dropping an XRS option...I really did wonder how fast the Corolla would have been with an engine from the Scion tC. There's been no word of replacements for the xB or xD to cover four-door Scions, so as far as I'm concerned, Toyota is getting increasingly more boring as a car brand, not counting the Scion nameplate.
"Toyota has added nearly four inches to the 2014 Corolla's wheelbase and will offer a new continuously variable transmission with seven simulated gear ratios."
"We take that to mean the CVT, as the base L model is still saddled with an old-as-dirt four-speed automatic"
I work at a Toyota dealership and we barely sell any Corolla models besides the CE base model. Young people just simply do not look at Corollas.
Once a Corolla, always a Corolla. The Corolla will always be behind the rest of the pack, and this one is no different. The car is well-established as a no-frills car that will get you from point A to point B without any fuss, nothing more nothing less. I don't see why Toyota would attempt to alienate their primary customer base by trying to make the Corolla sportier and appeal to a younger customer base.
And really? 132hp? The Civic's R18 achieves 140hp, and that engine debuted back in 2006. And a 4spd auto on the base model? What is it, 2001? I mean, I didn't expect anything more from Toyota anyway but this is quite disappointing. They had a great opportunity to really modernize something and from my perspective, failed.
Nothing special about that interior either, the new Toyota interiors besides the 2013 Avalon are the cheapest feeling interiors I've been in. Looks can be deceiving, there is nothing upscale about a Toyota interior. Hard plastic everywhere, barely any soft touch and if there is, it's strangely textured and looks like hard plastic anyway.
The 2014 Corolla interior is pretty much pulled straight from the Auris, but as you can see the Auris uses higher quality materials and doesn't use any of that tacky black gloss trim.
Seriously, I can't say I'm impressed. 40mpg city is really not very high, and that's not even real-world mileage either.
What I find a little humouring is the fact that a good portion of people who purchase Corollas really don't care about what it's like, they just want the name and the tried and true reliability that comes along with it. It's non-offensive, frugal and conservative to the max. Compared to say, the 2013 Civic and even the Focus which I feel is a superior car in every single way. I guess what I'm trying to say is, people who drive Corollas will continue driving Corollas, and people who don't will not consider it. I'm a young person and I certainly would never drive a Corolla.

^ Focus and Civic are better?
I don't see much difference..
Spoiler!
Have you ever sat, never mind driven a Focus or a Civic? You'd have to be blind or mentally slow to realize that the interior quality is significantly better on a Civic and Focus.
It's like Hyundai a few years ago. Their interior quality was horrendous, but their design made you overlook the cheapness. Toyota not only looks cheap and feels cheap, it ACTUALLY is cheap.
Obviously I have yet to drive the new Corolla, but I can say with confidence that the Civic and Focus are hard to beat, and knowing Toyota they probably will not beat the Civic or the Focus or the 3 or anything out there really, as usual.

Definitely makes me think of the previous gen Ford Focus with a bit of Hyundai styling mixed in. Not an inspiring design, and as Akinari said, it's almost too "different" to appeal to the Corolla's existing customer base. My mom has a Corolla from the previous generation and there's no way in hell I could see her in this upcoming design. It's "sporty" without the frills of actually being sporty.
I still find that Toyota interiors are better than the rest of their Japanese counterparts.

I would have to say nothing has surprised me more than the Focus's interior. Mostly all soft-touch on the dash, very nice, however a little cluttered for my liking.
Honestly, the interior that's most user-friendly and comforting to the eyes that makes the interior feel very airy and big has got to be the Civic. I used to despise the two-tier setup with a digital speedo but after driving one, I must say I instantly fell in love with it.
But as always, to each their own.
