errr first of all, the books been out for about 50 years, secondly, the Title has Smaug, so one who watches this movie would want to see Smaug for longer than the preview trailers...
errr first of all, the rules of this forum are all spoilers have to have a spoiler tag. Just because you may have read the books, doesn't mean everyone else has.

Was planning to watch normal version, but ended up watching ultra avx in 3D. I generally don't like watching stuff in 3D but I thought it was ok for this movie.
Better than first, but high frame rate is still odd. Riding the barrels through the water the underwater shots looked like something I'd see on TV. It was weird. Like splicing film and video clips together.
Read a couple reviews and first one mentioned the exact same thing. So I'm not the only one. 3D was good, though, and seemed to be less "headache inducing" than other 3D shows I've seen.
TDoS was even better than the parts depicted in the original novel, IMO! I applaud you, Peter Jackson! The final installment is going to be soooo epic with (*incoming Hobbit novel spoiler*) the
Spoiler!
Battle of the Five Armies
Also, I've had this song on repeat since the night I left the cinemas!
I'd say the high frame rate version is a slightly better match in Hobbit 2 (Desolation of Smaug) than it was in Hobbit 1 because it seemed like there are more action scenes in Hobbit2 where the higher fps can benefit from. The high frame rates in Hobbit 1 made a lot of scenery flyovers seem very CG / MMORPG.
I haven't seen the D-Box version for this film yet, but the IMAX 3D was so good that it was worth every single penny.
So I finally watch this the other day... No more DBox seats and Imax sold out.. settled for HFR 3D.. looks a bit unrealistic.. but good movie..
Anyone noticed something

the scene where they entered the room with all the dead dwarfs inside Erbor. If you recall from first part of Lord of the Rings, they also went into the same room but the only thing I noticed that stood out was the Well that was missing.. Merry (I think its him) tipped over the skeleton and into the well... Or is this a different room??

The one in LOTR was the mines of Moria. The one in the hobbit is a random chamber in the lonely mountain/erebor. Different places.
This movie sucks.........doesn't come remotely close to LOTR, I continually find the Dwarfs annoying as hell. For a casual fan that didn't read the book they've milked this way too much to the point where you're just annoyed.
Saw tonite in HFR 3D. Saw Hobbit 1 in regular-vision. I thought the whole thing looked pretty cool with the HFR. I wouldn't want to see every movie done this way, but it worked well for this movie as it creates more of a highly saturated fantasy feel that fits well. The 3D blended in very well too. The first scene with them walking thru Brie made it feel like you were there. But it still had alot of shuttering thru the fast paced action sequences where the action was in the close foreground.
Who wants to bet the barrel in the river thing turns into a ride at a park lol.
Overall, I think the movie was really good and better than the first one. Some parts were a little drawn out and there was one point where it seemed like the action sequence had gone on for too long and it was losing interest.
I went to normal 24fps 3d VIP and enjoyed it just fine. I'm not exactly sure if I missed out with the 48fps HFR.
I scoured the internet for reviews and some people claimed that HFR took the magic of film away. Rather than watching a film, making it appear as if you're actually on the set.
Played it safe so the gf didn't get sick as some people claimed to have done. Oh well, VIP is awesome. New liquor laws allow me to have a beer in the theater and no kids.

I had something similar happen to me when I switched to a 240hz LED TV. At first all the shows looked fucked up like they were a home movie. I don't notice it anymore but I remember when it was new, I wasn't sure I liked it but I just wasn't used to it. I no longer remember what it was like before.
