Commentators also called it a late cheap shot, but even on slow replay it doesn't look late. It's bang bang from when Eriksson shoots the puck and then the hit. | If Edler's hit was suspension worthy, this one's much more vicious.
Not sure what Scott's history is, but this hit wasn't clean.
The timing is debatable, but the elbow isn't.
Watch again in slow-mo. His elbow is down, but he actually begins to swing out the elbow right before he makes contact with eriksson's head,
and then the follow-through is clearly seen afterward. Look at Scott's number on his sleeve for reference of when he begins to swing out the elbow.
It's before he connects with Eriksson's head.
I wouldn't define that as "hunched" forward either, that's typical position when the knees are bent, releasing the puck.
He wasn't lunging for a loose puck like Hertl.
Intentional or not, that's a dangerous play that should be punished accordingly.

Slight aside with all the suspension talk but the NHL needs to adopt the NFL style for handing out suspensions. Look for intent to injure and not if the play led to an injury. This is the ONLY way to cut down/eliminate these dangerous plays.
Should it matter if the other player got injured? Absolutely not. A suspension should be handed out on the basis of the intention of injuring that player. It should be based on the act and not the outcome.

And if I may add, the skill and status of the player involved should have no merit on the decision. Star or scrub, victim or offender - the star quality of a player should have no influence on the outcome of a decision.

This should have been turned into the 'Savard Rule' with an automatic XX game suspension with a blind side hit to the head.
Much like the 'Brady rule'

At first I didn't think it was THAT late, but on the replay, you can see Scott doesn't lower and brace for the hit until after Erikkson gets rid of the puck. I don't feel Scott was going for the head intentionally, he was just finishing his check. That being said, it's a fast game and it was a fast play, and Scott is not a fast player. | I know you qualify the following statements:
-Had Erikkson dangled, it would have been the perfect hit
-I don't feel Scott was going for the head
-Scott was finishing his check
with:
-It's a fast game and it was a fast play
-Scott is not a fast player.
But in all seriousness, what are you even watching? The NHL made rules changes to address these types of hits specifically. Principal point of contact is the head. He's going to be suspended. Although he's never been suspended, I think he'll get north of 7.
I'll give you the fact that taking a closer look at the video it's not clear whether the hit was actually late nor was it really an elbow, but definitely it was an illegal check to the head. The type of hit that the league absolutely wants to abolish.
At what point do you hold the coach accountable and fine him. Rolston now has three incidents under his belt.
John Scott, TOI/GP by coach:
- 2013-14 Rolston: 4:57.
- 2011-12 Quenneville: 6:56.
- 2009-10 Richards: 8:36.
- 2008-09 Lemaire: 9:14. Quote:

Well, those extra few strides you take, the raised elbow you have, the jump before the hit, these all contribute to intent.

| Quest for the Cup: Episode 1 - Sportsnet.ca
Sportsnet mem cup documentary series - last year was the Saskatoon Blades, this year is the London Knights. We'll get to see some behind the scenes looks at Bo Horvat, which is pretty cool.

Yep, definitely see the elbow swing into the head.
Even easier to see now. Elbow was low, but not tucked in and stationary.

That wasn't a charge so on what basis do you prove intent?
Other than it being Scott there isn't much to fall back on

there's also politics in play, favouritism for teams, favouristism for star players and all that shit to deal with. this all leads to inconsistencies and players being confused as to what is actually legal and what isn't. in short, it's a mess and it needs fixing. shanny hasn't made the situation any better since he took the job.
