No suspension.
The Sedins can get north of $7 million in the open market, but what team will commit $14 million on them? If they leave, they leave together to the same team. So I kind of agree with Hondaracer that they don't have as much leverage as people may think. That said, the cap is forecast to go up over the next three years, but would the Sedins go to a team that isn't a contender. I highly doubt it. Let's just hope Gillis doesn't do what the Sens GM did with Alfie.
I don't think they will sign for anything less than $6 million.

Detroit has a tonne of cap room next year. Burke would go hard after the Sedins and Calgary has loads of cap.
Also, Zetterberg is getting $6.083M from his contract that started in 2009. Pratt is an idiot.
Sedins will take a hair cut to stay in van, they have less leverage than people think Posted via RS Mobile
They need a hair cut?

Was hoping he'd include the whole sequence for Danny's goal. That possession was awesome.
I called it the 5 on 5 power play.

Tough choice, I know the Sedins want this to be their last contract ever in the NHL.
Do you give them 5 years at 6m +? What about 3 years at like 7m +?
I think we can get 3 decent years out of them but can we get 5? Who knows.
If we say fuck it and don't resign them period then sure we have 12-14m to spend but who are you going to sign to replace 2 players?
I know sometimes it's easy to rip GM's for certain choices in which we think is a no brainer but I'm really on the fence about this one to be honest. I'm not sure what the right choice is.

My guess is that Gillis is trying to keep the core of our team intact, and hope that Torts can improve the development of our young players like Kassian and Santorelli so that we have a balanced team on offence.
-sort of trying to emulate San Jose with its veteran stars Thornton and Marleau, and the young guys like Pavelski, Couture, and Burns.
This season and the playoffs will be used to determine whether the Sedins are worth it in the long run to be Canucks in terms of our playoff success. Do you keep the twins or do a complete rebuild of the first line?
For everything the Sedins has done in Vancouver and all the criticisms they have faced to this very day, Gillis should be fired if he doesn't resign the Sedins.
Just purely look at how they took a pay cut to stay in Vancouver, they end up donating $1.5 million to Children's hospital.
Sonick is a genius. I won't go into detail what's so great about his post. But it's damn good!

i agree with the SJ emulation. Thornton, but moreso even "gutless" Marleau have taken a step back and let the kids in Pavelski and Couture take over
the kids in vancouvers system: Horvat, shattenkirk, guance, jensen...look to need some seasoning still. i would not hand over the reigns to them so fast. So expect the sedins to get at least 3 years
but oh god, if Luongo were to go, its time to hit the reset button. MG and the italian mafia of Aquiliinis better be pumping and humping his tires

Pavelski is 29 ... Couture is 25 this season ...
SJS isn't handing the team over to "kids" ... They're handing the team over to guys in their prime ...

thanks for the semantics
but these are kids relative to the likes of Thornton and Marleau who have been there for ages

The Sedins want to stay in Vancouver as well, I wouldn't be surprised if we signed them for 4-5 years at 4.5-5 a year average
I would be surprised that they get anywhere near close to that, that's a pretty generous lowball IMO.
My guess is 7-8 years in the 5-5.5 range, which will take them to the end of their careers. Cap hit for their latter years may seem high now, but 5 years from now the cap may well be above 80M so that's not a biggie for me. If they don't get a long term, I wouldn't bank on much if any hometown discount, ie. 2-3 years at ~7M per
Funny thing is MG had the opportunity to lock them up to life long contracts ala Lu's deal, but didn't believe in those deals at the time. Then he turns around and hands Lu his deal a year later. I bet he wishes he could turn back those hands of time.
Signing long term contracts now "long term" being anything over 4 as far as I'm concerned is risky as you're going to be on the hook of anything were to happen or retire Posted via RS Mobile
I think after the Luongo fiasco, MG is more than happy to have not signed anyone else to such a contract..
completely different context. There's only 1 elite goalie position per team, 30 in the whole league. Easily 4-5x that capacity when looking at skaters. Sedins could have been had for 12 yr 60M, if MG can get their next 7 years at 30M he'd be laughing all the way to the bank. Posted via RS Mobile

since contracts can no longer be front loaded like in the past, there's no cap recapture penalty due to early retirement. And sedins are not 35, so if they retire early their caphits won't stick to the end of their contracts Posted via RS Mobile
